Ask Ken Schorr how his agency's Veterans Legal Services program got started and he'll quickly credit the Women's Impact Fund.

Schorr is executive director of Legal Services of Southern Piedmont (LSSP). At this year's Wine & Wisdom event, Schorr said an $80,000 WIF grant launched the program that provides legal assistance at little to no cost to low-income veterans.

"This initiative is assisting Charlotte area veterans with disability compensation, discharge upgrades and other complex issues related to their service," said Schorr, speaking at this year's Wine and Wisdom.  "With the support of the Women's Impact Fund, we are able to provide the legal counsel and system expertise to help individuals successfully resolve cases that have major implications for their lives."

Meet new member Ruthann Granito Niosi

Ruthann Granito By Susan Patterson

I've yet to actually meet Ruthann, though she lives across the street from a good friend in Myers Park. But even via email, I found her to be warm, generous and available. I hope to connect with her in person soon.

Tell us about you, your work and how you got to Charlotte. I have two daughters, one living in New York and one who recently married and moved to Charlotte.  I bought a home here in Charlotte to better enable me to run back and forth between them.  For work, I have a law firm headquartered in New York, and a Global Corporate Advisory company with offices in Europe and the US, whose work I can really oversee from anywhere.
