Exploring WIF Values
By Kim Cornelson
Connections:

We believe in building stronger relationships and meaningful friendships among women who are united in their passion for improving our community. We value the connections created among our members, grantees, and the broader community.

I am a hugger living in a digital age. Looking directly at someone's face when we talk, laughing together as a group, and greeting friends with hugs are necessary for me to feel fully connected with other people. Visiting community groups on site, attending their performances, and celebrating successes at their events help me understand and relate to our multi-textured community and its needs.

Today we are both more connected and more isolated than in the past. With the Internet and social media, we can instantly communicate our thoughts and "likes" to others with a simple click. In many cases we substitute convenience for deep personal connections with individuals and our community.

The Women's Impact Fund helps fill this void for me. Many of my friends and I joined WIF in its first year. Being a part of WIF together deepened our ties and made our relationships richer. By serving on the Board as well as on various WIF committees, I have met and become lasting friends with dozens of diverse, interesting women.   We all come from different places and viewpoints, but we come together with a shared commitment and passion for philanthropy and community.

Getting To Know WIF Members Closer To Home

WIF's in-home neighborhood socials have become increasingly popular for member education, recruitment, and bridge building among members.  These informal socials provide opportunities for members to collaborate in support of WIF's impactful work in the community.

Two successful events were held recently.  On February 19th, WIF members Mary Margaret Porter, Paula Broadwell, and Jennifer Winstel co-hosted a WIF in-home social with nearly 30 women. On February 25th, WIF members Arrington Mixon, Leigh Goodwyn, Lise Hain, and Paula Broadwell hosted an even larger event in Myers Park with over 40 women who braved chilly winter weather.

Attendees included WIF members from each neighborhood, non-member guests seeking to learn more about WIF, and representatives from non-profit organizations in Charlotte who shared information on their causes.

If you'd like to host an in-home social, please contact the membership committee:  Pamela Harris-Young (pam@visightllc.com) or Paula Broadwell (paulabroadwell@yahoo.com).

Get to know member (and former Board Chair) Dianne Bailey
By Pam Johnson

I am meeting Dianne Bailey at the Charlotte Ballet, where Dianne is getting ready to go into rehearsal for "Dancing with the Stars of Charlotte," the Ballet's annual fundraising gala. Dianne checks her cell phone to stay updated on how much money her team has raised so far. (Each community dancer raises money that is split between the Charlotte Ballet and a nonprofit of the dancer's choice. Dianne is dancing for the new community access program at Discovery Place and to honor new ED and new WIF member Catherine Horne.)  **Don't forget you can cast your vote for Dianne at http://charlotteballet.org/tickets/gala.  Voting ends Friday, March 6th at 5PM!

Dianne, tell us about this fundraiser.

Part of me can't believe that I am doing this. I am NOT a dancer, not at all! I danced once when I was 5 and again at my wedding. But ultimately I was persuaded to conquer my fears by the opportunity to support the Charlotte Ballet and the new Welcome program at Discovery Place. When I took this leap of faith, little did I know my partner would be Charlotte Ballet's phenomenal Jordan Leeper (not a stage name!).
