With our recent website upgrade to a new version of Joomla, the menu dropdowns for our website are no longer functional on the iPad. We are working to fix this, but it will take some time to correct. Please bear with us!

Growing More Than Food

Bonnie Mabe, Garinger family advocate; Henry Owen, Friendship Gardens director; Marcus Gibson, Career Pathways intern; Jennifer Gayer, MeckEd Career Pathways advisor

When Marcus Gibson signed up for an internship at the urban garden behind Garinger High School, he knew he would be growing vegetables. What Marcus did not realize was how much he would grow.  "I have more confidence than before," he says, "and I know how to move objects out of my way to succeed."

Marcus' internship resulted from the great work of two WIF grantees: MeckEd's Career Pathways Program and Slow Food Charlotte's Friendship Trays Community Garden Initiative.  With our $90,000 grant, MeckEd expanded a program offering internships and work-based learning to students at Garinger. The school already had a Friendship Garden, one of many that have blossomed across Charlotte because of our $40,000 grant. And so a fruitful partnership was begun.

During 2013 more than 4,000 pounds of food - much of it grown by students - went to Friendship Trays, which delivers meals to disabled and elderly persons.
