February 2016
Volume 9, number 2

Greetings!

We have a lot to look forward to in 2016 - the renovated library will be reopening later this year as a more user-friendly space with added technological touches.  Libraries everywhere are finding new ways to engage the public's imagination, creativity, and desire to gain new skills.  Maybe you've heard or read in the news about how libraries are evolving - stories about Makerspaces come up periodically each year and very recently was the subject of some excellent reporting by WHYY's The Pulse.  Grid magazine covered Maker programs in their November 2015 issue and had this to say about programs' impact on lifelong learning: "...to provide anyone...the opportunity to follow his or her interests in a safe, free space where failure is encouraged as a necessary step of learning".  That may sound a lot like what libraries traditionally do, but I think we need to incorporate the idea that Grid put forward as part of our definition of the modern library...and part of the answer to the question of how libraries remain relevant in the 21st century.  Your feedback is welcome!

Since opening in May, we've been very gratified by your response to the Library Annex at 123 Kings Highway.  The feedback you provide - whether it is to point out something we are doing right or something we could do better - means a great deal to us.  I want to thank you for visiting us here, for taking advantage of the physical and digital collections, for making requests through our Interlibrary Loan service, using a computer, or just stopping in to say hello!

The region has experienced the first exciting snow event of the year and that did result in some closed days while we dug out.  When these things happen, don't forget the digital resources available even when the building is closed: Zinio, Hoopla, Tumblebooks, 3M, and Overdrive.

We remain grateful to the folks at Borough Hall for allowing our programming to be held there, and to our neighboring libraries of Cherry Hill Public Library, the Camden County Library system, and the Haddon Heights Public Library for allowing the Haddonfield residents to use their services during the library renovation.

Cordially,

Buy a Leaf to support the "We Love Our Library" Campaign

The HPL Library Board of Trustees has initiated  the "We Love Our Library" campaign to provide fund raising for the library's long awaited expansion and renovation.

The campaign will raise funds for the enhancements, such as contemporary furnishings, equipment, and newer technology throughout the building. You can help by buying a leaf on the tree mural created by HMHS National Honor Society members. The tree has moved over to the annex.  Donations are being accepted from $5 to $250. Check with the library staff at the  circulation desk. Donations of $250 or above will be permanently honored in the library after completion of the renovation, anticipated to be completed in the first half of 2016!
