January begins a New Year. There are many changes at the library. Eric Zino has been named the Acting Library Director by the Library Board of Trustees upon the retirement of Library Director Susan Briant. See story below. Stop in and meet Eric if you do not know him yet. He is a real asset at the library and will continue to grow the library's long term excellent customer service and improving collections, programs, and services to meet the community's needs and desires.

The library renovation is progressing.  Bricks are enclosing the library addition. See photo below. A special thank you to the renovation project manager, Sharon Parker Kearney, for all of her dedicated work. The construction deadline is moving back toward Spring now but the wait will be worth it. Watch for news!

Children's programs continue at Borough Hall. We are very grateful to the staff and Commissioners at Borough Hall for making space for programs for the library during the renovation. This continues into 2016.

Don't forget to check out the library's subscriptions to eBooks (the 3M Cloud and  Overdrive) which also has downloadable audio books. We also have Hoopla, providing download and streaming of movies, music, TV shows, and more audio books. Zinio now provides magazines. All with your library card! With the renovation, please consider these subscriptions to avail yourself of thousands of eBooks and audiobooks, movies, music, TV, and magazines.

Lastly, I retired yesterday. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the talented library staff, past and present. These folks have rolled out so many initiatives over the last decade, building on the library of Director Doug Rauschenberger. I want to thank the Library Boards, Mayors Colombi and Kasko, the Borough Commissioners and Borough staff, our excellent library staff and the wonderful Friends of the Library for support and many contributions. Thanks to all for affording me the opportunity to serve as director over the past nine years. Most of all, thank you to the Haddonfield community and community organizations for your friendship and warm support to our Haddonfield community library. Long live the Haddonfield Public Library! Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2016!

A special thank you to the neighboring libraries of Cherry Hill Public Library, the Camden County Library system, and the Haddon Heights Public Library for allowing the Haddonfield community to use their services during the library renovation.

Cordially,

Nelson Johnson.
Judge Nelson Johnson Book Discussion on January 14 at 7 pm at Borough Hall.

Join us for an evening with Nelson Johnson, author of
"Battleground New Jersey: Vanderbilt, Hague, and Their Fight for Justice".  Judge Johnson will sign copies of the book after the book discussion.

New Jersey's legal system was plagued with injustices from the time the system was established through the mid-twentieth century. In Battleground New Jersey, historian and author of Boardwalk Empire, Nelson Johnson chronicles reforms to the system through the dramatic stories of Arthur T. Vanderbilt-the first chief justice of the state's modern-era Supreme Court-and Frank Hague-legendary mayor of Jersey City. Two of the most powerful politicians in twentieth-century America, Vanderbilt and Hague clashed on matters of public policy and over the need to reform New Jersey's antiquated and corrupt court system. Their battles made headlines and eventually led to legal reform, transforming New Jersey's court system into one of the most highly regarded in America.

Of special interest to Haddonfield residents is a chapter on Governor Alfred Driscoll, Haddonfield's native son. Call 856-429-1304, ext. 114 to register for this free program co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library. This program is the last of Director Briant's adult lecture series. The snow date is Jan. 28 at 7 pm. Click here to read more about the book and author.
