December is a very busy month. The library slows down a little. People come in quickly to grab books and DVDs. A reminder- the library has a fine collection of print magazines for check out.
This month we will launch Zinio- a collection of fifty digital magazines. See story below!

The library renovation is progressing. The roof is close to being replaced! Work on the addition continues. See photo below. A special thank you to the renovation project manager, Sharon Parker Kearney, for all of her dedicated work.

Don't forget to ask about our Museum pass program for family fun at no cost with your library card!

Children's holiday programs continue at Borough Hall. We are very grateful to the staff and Commissioners at Borough Hall for making space for programs for the library during the renovation. This continues into the New Year.

Don't forget to check out the library's subscriptions to eBooks (the 3M Cloud and  Overdrive) which also has downloadable audio books. We also have Hoopla, providing download and streaming of movies, music, TV shows, and more audio books.  All with your library card! With the renovation, please consider these subscriptions to avail yourself of thousands of eBooks and audiobooks, movies, music, and TV.

Lastly, I am retiring as of Dec. 31. I want to thank the Library Boards, our excellent library staff and the wonderful Friends of the Library for the opportunity to serve as director over the past nine years. Most of all, thank you to the Haddonfield community for your friendship and warm support to our Haddonfield community library. I will hope to see you at the library before Dec. 31. Best wishes for happy and healthy holidays!

Cordially,

Nelson Johnson.
Judge Nelson Johnson Book Discussion on January 14 at 7 pm at Borough Hall.

Join us for an evening with Nelson Johnson, author of
"Battleground New Jersey: Vanderbilt, Hague, and Their Fight for Justice".  Judge Johnson will sign copies of the book after the book discussion.

New Jersey's legal system was plagued with injustices from the time the system was established through the mid-twentieth century. In Battleground New Jersey, historian and author of Boardwalk Empire, Nelson Johnson chronicles reforms to the system through the dramatic stories of Arthur T. Vanderbilt-the first chief justice of the state's modern-era Supreme Court-and Frank Hague-legendary mayor of Jersey City. Two of the most powerful politicians in twentieth-century America, Vanderbilt and Hague clashed on matters of public policy and over the need to reform New Jersey's antiquated and corrupt court system. Their battles made headlines and eventually led to legal reform, transforming New Jersey's court system into one of the most highly regarded in America.

Of special interest to Haddonfield residents is a chapter on Governor Alfred Driscoll, Haddonfield's native son. Call 856-429-1304, ext. 114 to register for this free program co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library. The snow date is Jan. 28 at 7 pm. Click here to read more about the book and author.

Buy a Leaf to support the "We Love Our Library" Campaign

The HPL Library Board of Trustees has
initiated  the "We Love Our Library" campaign to provide fund raising for the library's long awaited expansion and renovation.

The campaign will raise funds for the enhancements, such as contemporary furnishings, equipment, and newer technology throughout the building. You can help by buying a leaf on the tree mural created by HMHS National Honor Society members. The tree has moved over to the annex.  Donations are being accepted from $5 to $250. Check with the library staff at the  circulation desk. Donations of $250 or above will be permanently honored in the library after completion of the renovation, anticipated to be completed in the first half of 2016! For more information visit here!

Giving Tuesday is Dec. 1 !

Dec. 1 is  a global day for giving back. On Dec. 1, 2015, charities, families, businesses, students and more will come together to create #GivingTuesday a day when people around the world will use the Internet & social media to share information about how they give and why. Although the Haddonfield Friends have not started a formal campaign on the Giving Tuesday website, visit
www.hfol.org to renew your membership or make a tax deductible donation before the year's end.  Here are a few good reasons to support the dynamic Friends:
  • Friends' funding paid for fun programs for 510 Haddonfield children and teens to participate in the Summer Reading program- completed by 350 - they promote reading!
  • Friends' seed funding has provided a service called Hoopla, a digital media platform of music, movies, television, and audio books, all available with your library card!
  • Friends donated three early literacy computer stations for the youngest children in the children's dept. - a fun way for young children to learn and have fun
  • Friends have supported the 3M Cloud and Discovery terminal providing eBooks for Haddonfield readers
  • Friends provide a spectacular book sale for the community every September
  • Friends have pledged to provide furnishings in the library renovation
  • Visit www.hfol.org
