November is here and the library is moving forward with the long awaited renovation and addition to the building. The Library Board is close to finalizing an alternate site for service in the downtown district. The site or "annex" will offer a microcosm of library programs and services. The library will have about 1/4 of its circulating collections for check out. Children's programs will continue with a small area for families. Reseach, computer and interlibrary loan services will continue. Arrangements have been made with area libraries to assist with loaning of collections to fit in with our community's needs.

Hopefully a construction bid will be awarded by the Borough of Haddonfield before the end of 2014.  The library is expected to be closed for about seven months. Watch for updates and special information bulletins as plans are firmed up. The staff and Library Board will make every effort to minimize interruptions in service. We believe this inconvenience will be worth it when the renovated library reopens in 2015. Stay tuned.... read about an opportunity to buy a piece of library furniture below.

Jo-Ann Pure, the library's head of the Reference and Computer Instruction Dept., is retiring on Nov. 19. Read the story below and stop in to wish Jo-Ann the best in her well deserved retirement.

Another long time volunteer and former Library Board officer is retiring. Bonnie Rosenberg is finishing at the end of November. See story herein. We thank Bonnie for all of her many contributions to the HPL!

Downloadable materials are very important to you and the library launches Hoopla on Nov 10.  Librarian Kathy Metrick is spearheading this new service of downloadable music, movies, television, and audio books. Check it out!

Don't forget to check out the library's subscriptions to eBooks (the 3M Cloud and a vastly improved Overdrive, )which also has downloadable audio books. The library has been using the 3M Cloud for more than one year now and use is booming. Stop in if you need any help getting started with eBooks, try the Discovery terminal to see books in the Cloud or visit the links above with lots of information to get started. All with your library card!

  • HOOPLA (a commotion or hullabaloo) in Haddonfield
    Hold onto your hats!

HOOPLA comes to the Haddonfield Public Library on Monday Nov. 10th. HOOPLA, well-deserving of its exciting name, is a digital media platform offering thousands of full-length music albums, audiobooks, films, TV shows, and instructional videos for kids, teens & adults. Haddonfield Library cardholders will be able to borrow these titles to enjoy on PCs, tablets, and phones. Both streaming and temporary downloading of content are supported. Multiple borrowers can access the same title at the same time so no more waiting for popular titles.  Better yet, access to these titles is free of charge. Since borrowed titles are automatically returned at the end of their loan periods, HOOPLA titles are fine free.  This media platform is perfectly suited to life on the go!  View/listen to music, audiobooks, and films across your mobile devices, and the HOOPLA mobile app will keep your place as you go. Don't miss out on all the fun; make sure you have your library card number and associated library password ready for the HOOPLA start date of Nov. 10th.  New to Haddonfield and don't have a library card yet?  Have you forgotten your library password?  Then be sure to drop by the library soon to register for a card or reset your password.  Come see what the HOOPLA is all about the week of Nov. 10th!

The Friends of the Haddonfield Public Library have generously funded HOOPLA @ HPL. To support the Friends visit  www.hfol.org

     Jo-Ann Pure
      Jo-Ann Pure is Retiring!

Jo-Ann Pure, the head of the library's Reference and Computer Instruction Dept., is retiring on November 19.  Jo-Ann has been at the Haddonfield Public Library for the past 34 years. She began her career as the Children's Librarian. She held that position for 12 years. Jo then moved "upstairs" and took the position as the head Reference Librarian.  Jo-Ann has answered thousands of questions about every subject over these many years. She is an excellent researcher, patient and very thorough. She is especially well versed on the history of Haddonfield. She had a good teacher in Doug Rauschenberger and carried on with the history after Doug retired.
As technology changed library services, Jo attended the NJ State Library's "Train the Trainer" workshop. Jo started the library's computer instruction programs. She has taught hundreds of people about the Microsoft applications, using computers, email,  employment searching, genealogy, Morningstar Financial Services, and more recently, how to use eBooks on the library's subscriptions to the 3M Cloud and Overdrive.

As Haddonfield has many authors, Jo has also done research for authors as they prepared books.

Jo's final major job has been finding homes for books about NJ that the library had in the NJ Room for fifty years. Jo has worked tirelessly on this job to find good homes in NJ libraries and historical societies for these books while our library retains its Haddonfield collections.

Stop in and wish Jo happiness and good health in her retirement. Jo will be greatly missed by her colleagues, the Library Board and Friends of the Library, and especially by the Haddonfield community. Well done, Jo-Ann, and thank you for your extraordinary service at the Haddonfield Public Library.
