September is Library Card Sign Up Month - A library card is your child's ticket to academic achievement !

Every parent wants their child to succeed, and one of the simplest ways you can ensure your child's academic success is by making a quick trip to the library. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Haddonfield Public Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most import school supply of all - a free library card.

Resources at the Haddonfield Public Library are available to anyone who has a library card.
Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and services that support academic achievement.  Students have access to many authentic electronic resources for research on reading, literary criticism, science, history, the World Book, Popular Science, Facts on File, Novelist, learning languages - to name a few. Electronic resources are available for all ages of students. The library also has thousands of eBooks for study and recreational reading. The 3M Cloud and Overdrive provide eBooks and downloadable audio books for learning and recreational reading. These are available via the library's website at www.haddonfieldlibrary.org Download an app and you will be reading in the cloud in a few minutes!

Throughout the course of the month, the library will host a number of activities, including the popular Fine Free Week from Sept. 22-30.
Bring back overdue items and your fines will be waived. It doesn't matter how long the item has been overdue. At the same time bring in food to help those in need. The library partners with the
Food Bank of South Jersey to distribute nonperishable food. Additionally,
if you have lost your library card, come get a new one and we'll waive the $3 replacement fee - all month long!

It's all available @ the Haddonfield Public Library. Anyone who lives, works full time, or is a full time student  in Haddonfield is eligible for a library card!

Dr. Martin Novelli visits on Sept. 17 at 7 pm to give a program on World War I: The War That DIDN'T End All Wars.

Join us for this lively discussion. The 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I, which will be commemorated in many places and many ways between 2014 and 2018, will remind the world that the "Great War" as it came to be known remains the most significant event of the 20th century. The impact of the war continues into the 21st century as the consequences of the four years of unrelenting bloodshed and horror permeate the politics of the world.

The assassination of Arch Duke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, and his wife Sophie on June 28, 1914 set off a month of frantic political and military alarms that culminated in a series of declarations of war at the start of August and plunged most of Europe (and parts of Africa and Asia) into conflict. The belief that after a few battles the war would be over by Christmas and the status quo would be pretty much the same soon gave way to the nightmare (by Christmas there were already a million casualties) of four years of bloodshed that killed or wounded over forty million soldiers and civilians and destroyed the political structures of Europe.

Dr. Martin Novelli recently retired from Ocean County College after twenty-one years as Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts and Professor of Film, History and Humanities. He continues to teach one course a semester as Adjunct Professor of Liberal Arts at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He is co-author (with Dr. Frank J. Wetta of Kean University) of THE LONG RECONSTRUCTION: THE POST-CIVIL WAR SOUTH IN HISTORY FILM, AND MEMORY (2013). He contributed an essay - "Bill Ehrhart as Educator" - to THE LAST TIME I DREAMED ABOUT THE WAR: ESSAYS ON THE LIFE AND WRITING OF W.D. EHRHART(2014) an international collection honoring Vietnam veteran, poet, essayist, activist, and teacher W.D. Ehrhart.
