Haddonfield Public Library is celebrating National Library Week from April 13-19, joining libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in highlighting the value of libraries, librarians and library workers. The theme this year is Lives Change @ Your Library!

Often the heart of their communities, campuses or schools, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study.  Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.

The library also serves teens and people with disabilities.

This year the Library Board of Trustees is very pleased to announce that the library's computer systems are being upgraded and will be completed by National Library Week. "Service to the community has always been the focus of the Haddonfield Public Library" said Deborah Marchand, president of the Library Board of Trustees. "While this aspect has never changed, libraries have grown and evolved in how they provide for the needs of every member of the community. The new computers will help all of our citizens with learning, acquiring skills, and succeeding in life.programs."

    Eagle Scout Chris Ehrhardt
Celebrating Eagle Scout Chris Ehrhardt's Tricentennial Project !

Chris Ehrhardt, a senior at Haddonfield Memorial High School, has completed a project as part of the Tricentennial Celebration. Chris began his project in February 2013. He met with a committee of local residents to develop and oversee his project. Chris decided to interview 12 of Haddonfield's leading citizens to create a video and audio history of Haddonfield at the time of the Elizabeth Haddon Tricentennial 300th anniversary. Congratulations to Chris who earned his Eagle Scout status after completing this year long project to record Haddonfield's history. Chris will enter Lafayette College in the fall of 2014.

Chris developed questions to ask the interviewees. Each person talks about a different aspect of life in Haddonfield as it is now and as it has been for the last half of the 20th century. Those interviewed reflect on how Haddonfield is in terms of the vision of Elizabeth Haddon.

Members of the Steering Committee assisting Chris were: Maureen Eyles, Jim Eyles, Cathy Smith, Greg Graham,  Charles Zimmerman of Haddonfield Memorial High School and Susan Briant, chair and project sponsor representing the Haddonfield Public Library. Kim Custer, a member of the Historical Society, also assisted. A special thanks to all of these folks!

To view the 12 interviews, each about seven minutes long, visit here.  The library will also have DVDs of the interviews for check out available on April 14. The presentation will be archived on the library's website and also with other local historical websites.  Chris especially thanks all those who were interviewed including:
    • Introduction by Chris Ehrhardt
    • Butch Brees on the Hadrosaurus Project and the Haddonfield Volunteer Fire Company
    • Susan Briant on the Haddonfield Library and the future of libraries
    • Bill Brown on the 65 Club, the soccer league and the town crier
    • Former Mayor Tish Colombi on her time in Haddonfield

The Rise and Fall of the American Western with Martin Novelli on April 23 at 7 pm.

On April 23 at 7 pm, local film historian, Professor Martin Novelli, will give a program on"The Rise and Fall of the American Western."
For nearly seven decades, the American western was the most popular and most prominent genre of film (7,000 plus produced between 1910 and 1970). Tales of the "mythic" west go back to the 19th century dime novels and the exaggerated adventures of figures like Kit Carson, Buffalo Bill, Billy the Kid, and many others. With the coming of film at the end of the 19th century, an insatiable audience for western stories was already in place. And the westerns, first silent, then sounds, first black and white, then in color served this audience both the basic staples and then during the "golden age" of the western between 1939 and 1970, an array of diverse masterpieces memorable to this very day. Then, in the late sixties and on into the 70s and beyond, the western lost its grip on the movie-going public. The western no longer enjoys this popularity.

Mr. Novelli is a professor at Ocean County College and is a leading authority on American Westerns. He is the author of  The Long Reconstruction: the Post Civil War South in History, Film, and Memory.  Mr. Novelli is a local resident and sought after speaker for the library's adult programs. Call 429-1304, ext. 114 to register for this free program, co-sponsored by the
    Haddonfield Friends of the Library.
