Greetings!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone, from the Library Board and staff! The library will feature a display this month on being thankful. November 13  is Kindness Day. A display of reasons to be thankful and examples of kindness will be on the first floor. Circulation Manager Claire Stairiker places the display.

The Library Board is pleased to remind you that the library will be open on a former budget closing day -  Veterans Day. The library will also be open the day after Thanksgiving. The Library Board is projecting the restoration of all budget closing days in 2014, except Good Friday and Easter weekend and the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Thanks to the Borough Commissioners for stabilizing funding for the library over the past few years. Hopefully this will continue in 2014 to reduce the budget closing days.

The library continues outreach to let the community know about many new services - such as new subscriptions to eBooks (the 3M Cloud and a vastly improved Overdrive, which now  allows the renewals of audio and eBooks if there is no wait for the book.) Brochures are available at the library and Borough Hall on these easy to use services. All with your library card!

The adult dept. is sponsoring two excellent programs this month. See stories below on Evans Pond on Nov. 7 and What if Lincoln Had Lived on Nov. 13.

We welcome back our Teen Coordinator Erica Braverman Coonelly. Teen  craft night returns on Nov. 26 when teens will make a salt dough holiday ornament at 6:30 pm.   It's all available @ your library!

Deborah Garwood Returns on November 7 at 7 pm -

From Historic Millpond to 21st century Park: Evans Pond, Haddonfield, NJ

This presentation on Evans Pond highlights its role in Haddonfield history. Evans Pond is located along the Cooper River at the border of Haddonfield and Cherry Hill. Formed when Irish Quakers dammed the Cooper River in 1697, it provided waterpower to milling enterprises that processed grains, lumber, and cloth over the next two centuries. From Colonial times through the American Revolution and Civil War era, generations of Quaker farmers managed the mills as part of a prosperous and extensive farmstead that is historically known as the Kay-Evans Farm. The millpond acquired its present name in the late 1830s, when Thomas Evans increased the mills' productivity. The success of the mills, as much as the beauty of the deep lake, contributed to Evans Pond's landmark status in the region.

Deborah will sign copies of her 2009 book on Evans Pond and discuss research she has conducted to update the community on Evans Pond. Call 429-1304, ext. 114 to register for this free program co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library. Click here  for more information on the presentation.

Martin Novelli  Discusses "What if Lincoln Had Lived" on Nov. 13 at 7 pm

On November 13 at 7 pm, Martin Novelli discusses "What if Lincoln Had Lived". Professor Novelli is the author of
"The Long Reconstruction: The Post Civil War South in History, Film, and Memory"
published in mid Sept. 2013.  This is a timely topic at the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. "What If Lincoln Had Lived" offers what some historians label a "counterfactual" reading of events in history.  In this case, the discussion centers on how Lincoln may have succeeded or failed during his second administration to reconcile north and south and to convince the south that it had to accept the newly freed former slaves as citizens entitled to all the rights accorded to Americans under the Constitution. Despite his enormous political skills, Lincoln would have faced staggering resistance to the idea that a reordering of political, social, and cultural life of the south had to change.Mr. Novelli will sell and autograph copies of his new book at the end of the discussion and question and answer session.

Dr. Novelli is a Professor of Film, History, and Humanities at Ocean County College.

To register for this free program, co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library, call 856-429-1304, ext. 114.
