Greetings!
Happy Fall, everyone! The Haddonfield Friends of the Library Book Sale was very successful! The Friends and library thank everyone in the community for volunteering to make the sale the best ever! See story and photos below.
The Library Board is pleased to remind you that the library will be open on two former budget closing days - Columbus Day and Veterans Day.The library will be open every day in October! Thanks to the Borough Commissioners for stabilizing funding for the library for the past few years.
Fall Festival and many other events are coming. The library is doing a new round of outreach to let the community know about many new services - such as new subscriptions to eBooks ( the 3M Cloud and a vastly improved Overdrive, which will soon allow renewals of audio and eBooks if there is no wait for the book.) Look for us at Fall Festival on Oct. 19 and get a brochure on these easy to use services. All with your library card!
October focuses on Breast Cancer Awareness. Obamacare begins this month. Our staff is gearing up to help citizens find out about the new health care services. If we don't have the answer we will help you to find it with our professional librarians, led by Jo Pure.
We welcome back our Teen Coordinator Erica Braverman Coonelly. Teen programs will begin again after a summer hiatus.
Cordially,
Susan Briant

Adult Program: October 16 at 7 pm - "Martha and I: Life, Love, and Loss in Alzheimer's Shadow" by Donald R. Fletcher. Meet Donald Fletcher while he discusses and signs copies of his book, "Martha and I." This is a love story-unusual, as it is also a book about the experience of Alzheimer's disease. The primary story line focuses on the long struggle millions of families are experiencing, coping with the wasting and heartbreak of Alzheimer's. The reader experiences the disease with Martha Fletcher and her husband, Don, a retired Presbyterian minister, as he relates her first falterings and then the inexorable progress of the illness. The literary structure has alternating chapters telling a parallel story. This is the vibrant narrative of Martha's life and her 70-year marriage to Don, from a couple of glimpses of her childhood and her meeting him, to their commitment to each other, to scenes from their long and varied careers-in Chile, Mexico, Texas, Alabama and New Jersey-and an ever-maturing love. These chapters transcend the love story genre, because Martha, a highly skilled musician, fashioned a career of her own at every stop along the way; and Don points up her many accomplishments. The final chapters bring the reader right up to the present time. To register for this free program, co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library, call 856-429-1304, ext. 114. |
Deborah Garwood Returns on November 7 at 7 pm -
From Historic Millpond to 21st century Park: Evans Pond, Haddonfield, NJ
This presentation on Evans Pond highlights its role in Haddonfield history. Evans Pond is located along the Cooper River at the border of Haddonfield and Cherry Hill. Formed when Irish Quakers dammed the Cooper River in 1697, it provided waterpower to milling enterprises that processed grains, lumber, and cloth over the next two centuries. From Colonial times through the American Revolution and Civil War era, generations of Quaker farmers managed the mills as part of a prosperous and extensive farmstead that is historically known as the Kay-Evans Farm. The millpond acquired its present name in the late 1830s, when Thomas Evans increased the mills' productivity. The success of the mills, as much as the beauty of the deep lake, contributed to Evans Pond's landmark status in the region.
Deborah will sign copies of her 2009 book on Evans Pond and discuss research she has conducted to update the community on Evans Pond. Call 429-1304, ext. 114 to register for this free program co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library. Click here for more information on the presentation.
