Greetings!
Happy Labor Day and on to the school year and Friends Book Sale!
September is Library Card sign up month. In today's world a library card is an essential ingredient to a student's success. Check out the article below and take advantage of how easy it is to get your library card.
The Friends of the Library Book Sale will be held on Sept. 21 and 22 while the Members Only preview is on Sept. 20. Read the story herein. Please visit - the sale gets better every year and our Friends need your support. Bring those unwanted books in now through Sept. 18 to add to the sale! Volunteers to help with the sale are needed, too! Don't forget the Lions Club Flea Market on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Centennial Square!
If you want to find out about the library's 2 subscriptions to eBooks and how to use them with your device, attend a class on Sept. 10 from 6-7 pm. Learn about getting free eBooks with your library card with Overdrive or the 3M Cloud. Jo-Ann Pure is the instructor and our head Reference and Computer Instruction Librarian. If you can't make the class stop in for a one on one guided tour or pick up brochures on how to get started at the first floor Reference Desk. Call 429-1304, ext. 112 for more information. No registration is required for these free classes.
Our newsletter and online catalog have a new look. The drawing of the library above was created by Marcia Steinbock. She is the artist who created the note cards sold by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library. The banner is adapted from that image. Kathleen Metrick, our Supervisor of Cataloging and Technical Services, developed the text and color schemes. Hats off to Marcia and Kathleen for their creative endeavors!
On display this month from Sept. 9-20 are the theme baskets that will be on sale at the Friends Members only event and at the sale. Susan Reed creates these baskets, which make unique gifts for your loved ones. At the end of the month the display is Banned Books. This display, placed by Claire Stairiker, is a reminder of public libraries' role in our democracy.
Cordially,
Susan Briant

September is Library Card Sign up Month at the Haddonfield Public Library
As students head back to school this September, parents are encouraged to visit the Haddonfield Public Library and make sure their children and teens sign up for the most important school supply of all - a library card.
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents and caregivers that a library card is the smartest card you can own. When it comes to achieving academic success, a library card provides students with access to a world of both print and electronic resources. Students can access free databases, online homework help and attend programs, activities and events that provide an added value to the educational experience. It's easy to see why eighty-four percent of Americans agree that the public library is important to education.
Today's students learn differently than their predecessors, with studies indicating that students most effectively learn when they are allowed to follow their personal interests. Libraries and librarians are on the frontlines of engaging these students, making a library card an essential tool for inspiring a passion for learning.
Today's libraries provide children and teens with access to new and innovative software. The Haddonfield Public Library provides online tools for taking tests for all levels of academic achievement and preparing for college; learning more than 75 languages online; reading thousands of eBooks for school and pleasure; and so much more. It is all available through your Haddonfield Public Library card. Stop in and get your card on the spot if you are a Haddonfield resident; business owner or full time employee; or student at a Haddonfield school.
The library also comes with an expert in developing original programs and honing these new skills - a librarian. What better place is there to explore and develop new interests than the library? For more information about obtaining the library card that opens up a world of possibilities for students, visit the library or www.haddonfieldlibrary.org

Volunteers are also needed to work the sale. There are many jobs from carrying out the sale items, cashiering, baking for the sale, assisting buyers in finding items, and much more. This is a good opportunity for Haddonfield students to do community service volunteering.

Toby Zinman Visits on Sept. 26 to Talk about Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
Toby Zinman, just back from London, will talk about Shakespeare's Globe Theatre- its architecture, history, and the wonderful stories about the dedication it took to rebuild it, and the commitment to "original practices" in performance, staying true to Elizabethan theatre. Toby will have just seen Shakespeare's rarely performed HENRY VI trilogy-- all in one day! These three plays are now touring England, being performed on historic battlefields where the plays' action takes place, and she will have caught them on the one day they are in London.
Toby Zinman is a Professor of English at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She is also a theatre critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, and a popular presenter at the library's adult programs. To register for this free program co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library, call 856-429-1304, ext. 114.

This allows you to easily search, check out items, and place requests. You can take out 3 eBooks at once. There are no renewals and no fines! The 3M Cloud has a fine selection of children's and teen eBooks as well as popular adult books. Just download an app, register, and off you go.
"Thanks to our Friends of the Library, we also have a Discovery Terminal" said President Gene Kain of the Library Board of Trustees. " This kiosk is upstairs near to the staff. You can come in and learn how to use the Discovery Terminal to check out e-Books. We also have two eBook readers to go with the system if you need to borrow one.
