Greetings!
Happy Spring!
There is a lot going on at the library, including going green for Spring. Displays of green and environmental reading will be out this month. Check our new display racks for these collections that can help you to live a more environmentally sound life. Haddonfield's Sustainable Group will also have a poster of events in the library during May that you might want to attend. Claire Stairiker placed the green displays.
Our new 3M Cloud system for the loan of eBooks is booming already. Please stop in and check out some of these books on the new Discovery Terminal. Or visit our catalog. There are more children's and teen books. Read the story below.
If you are in the mood to visit the shore, come to the adult author program this month "Remembering South Cape May" given by local author Joe Burcher on May 22. This promises to be an interesting program.
Congratulations to Mayor Colombi and Cheryl Brady on the occasion of their retirements. See story below.

Friday- 10 am to 6 pm

Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer.

Authors Joe Burcher and Robert Kenselaar Visit, Discuss & Autograph " Remembering South Cape May" on May 22
On May 22 at 7 pm, Haddonfield resident and local author Joe Burcher will discuss his book "Remembering South Cape May: the Jersey Shore Town that Vanished into the Sea". The book is co-authored by Robert Kenselaar and was published by History Press. For all who love the Jersey Shore and Cape May in particular, this is a quaint history of the tiny town of South Cape May, long gone and now just a memory. Few would imagine that the land currently occupied by the Nature Conservancy's Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge, or "The Meadow", was once the picturesque Jersey Shore town of South Cape May. By the early 20th century, a striking hotel and homes designed by renowned Victorian-era architects dotted the landscape. Residents and visitors alike spotted rumrunners racing across the beachfront during Prohibition and endured World War II with German submarines lurking just offshore. But by 1954, barely a trace of the town remained except for about twenty of the original houses, which were moved a mile away. Join one of the town's last residents, Joseph Burcher, as he chronicles life in South Cape May before the Atlantic swallowed this serene town. Mr. Burcher and Mr. Kenselaar will autograph copies of the book after the discussion. Call 429-1304, ext. 114 to register for this free program co-sponsored by the Haddonfield Friends of the Library.

The 3M Cloud eBook System is now available @ your Library! The Haddonfield Public Library launched a new eBooks system on April 15 during National Library Week. The new system, called the 3M Cloud, is integrated into the library's online library catalog, POLARIS. The 3M Cloud is the first system that runs in POLARIS or through any other integrated library system. It is easy for borrowers to check out items, place requests, and check in - from the library or from home. Thanks to the Haddonfield Friends of the Library, partners of the Library Board of Trustees in this effort, a Discovery Terminal is available at the library to introduce the system to the community. The kiosk presents an opportunity for those who have not used eBooks to try them. Two eBook readers are also available for loan for 2 weeks for those who do not have eBook readers. Most people probably have devices that are compatible with the system. They can use it directly by visiting our website or online catalog. A few easy steps and you will be borrowing eBooks from the 3M Cloud. Your Haddonfield Library card must be current and in good standing to use the Cloud. This system has more children's and teen books than have been available in the past through Overdrive. The library continues its participation in Overdrive for eBooks and downloadable audio books. Consider taking a computer class at the library or drop in to learn how to use the Cloud from our reference librarians. Brochures are available at the public service desks. Click here to see the schedule of computer classes. A special thanks to our Tech Services staff, Kathleen Metrick, Jeannie Reinking, and Pam Alles for their work in implementing the 3M Cloud! |

A Special Thank You and Best Wishes to Cheryl Brady on Her Retirement
Cheryl Brady, a long time Library Assistant at the library, is retiring as of May 1. Cheryl began her duties at the library in 1989. Cheryl worked at the Circulation desks on both floors of the library. She also worked in the Technical Services Dept., processing and covering the collections for the community to enjoy. Cheryl particularly enjoyed her work with babies, children and families in the Children's Dept. Cheryl's warm smile and friendly ways made her one of the library's best good will ambassadors with the community. Cheryl also took great joy in managing donated books and working with the Haddonfield Friends on their book sales. The Library Board and staff wish Cheryl , her husband Barry, and their sons all the best in retirement. Cheryl promises to visit the library often. Well done, Cheryl, and thanks! |

Thanks to Mayor Tish Colombi and Friends Mike Kinsey and Natalia Kastenberg
The Library Board of Trustees presented a resolution to Mayor Tish Colombi at the April 23 Board meeting for her extraordinary years of service to the library. Mayor Colombi is one of a select group of mayors in NJ that chose to attend Library Board meetings instead of appointing an alternate. Tish has served on the Library Board since 2000, upon becoming mayor. She also served on building committees to plan for a larger library. The Library Board wishes Tish and her family all the best in retirement. Well done, Tish, and thank you for your excellent support of the Haddonfield Public Library.

Tax dollars support Ebsco's Business Source Premier, the general magazine indexes and full text of thousands of magazines (Masterfile); the Health indexes on both the consumer and professional levels, and Academic Search Premier for students.
