Greetings!
March is coming in like a lamb and hopefully spring won't be far behind.
The library's adult book group "Turn the Page" enjoys monthly sessions. The group is lively and has spirited discussions. If you are thinking about joining a book group, consider the library group. Kathleen Metrick, the librarian in charge, really enjoys leading these sessions. She even bakes treats for the members. The next meeting is March 18 at 7 pm and the monthly selection is Learning to Swim by Sara Henry. To see the upcoming books and dates, click here. For more information or to sign up, contact kmetrick@haddonfieldlibrary.org
If you want to learn to use a fine database for marketing research for your small business or job search, attend a computer class on March 21 to learn more about RefUSA. See the schedule of computer classes in this issue, or schedule a one on one session with Jo-Ann Pure, the Head of the Reference Dept. She also teaches sessions on using a variety of mobile devices to access the library's ebook loaning system, Overdrive. See story below.
The Library is celebrating Women's History Month with a display this month. For parents with children with special needs, see the display on Developmental Disabilities on the first floor.
The Children's Dept. continues to hold the popular Read to a Dog program on Tuesdays and Thursdays for young children. Reading with Daisy, Desi, and Visa is very popular. See the schedule in the calendar below. Contact the Children's Dept. at 429-1304, ext. 118 to register.
The adult program this month is on March 20 when J.E. Souders discusses and autographs copies of " Pine Valley Golf Club." This is a fascinating place in Camden County and you will want to hear this book talk.
Teen Craft nights return on March 19 when teens will make a bead jewelry pendent. These evenings are a good time for teens to create and relax with friends.
Finally, Uncle Sam has sent tax forms and instructions. Visit us soon to get those much needed forms.
Cordially,
Susan Briant

J. E. Souder Visits on March 20 to Book Talk "Pine Valley Golf Club"
On March 20 at 7 pm author J.E. (Jackie) Souders, author of Pine Valley Golf Club, will discuss her book and autograph copies. Pine Valley is not only a golf club but an enclave. From its inception by George A. Crump, the Camden, New Jersey local who designed and built this magnificent course, it has been surrounded by mystery, excitement, and glamour.
In 2013, it will celebrate its hundredth anniversary. Yet, though consistently ranked the number one golf course in the world by Golf Digest, it has hosted only two international tournaments, the Walker Cup in 1936 and 1985.
Pine Valley itself has been home to Gatsby-era wealth, British nobility, Roaring Twenties gangsters, a World War II secret scientist, and, today, celebrities, captains of industry, and political leaders.
This book delves into these aspects and more. It is meant to enlighten and entertain the reader with history and photos of this exclusive, fenced town that is a private golf club. The snow date for the program is March 27 at 7 pm.
J. E. Souders (Jackie) is a native of southern New Jersey, and resides four miles from Pine Valley. She has a B.A. in sociology and has been selling real estate for the past thirty years. As a local historian and artist, she has always been intrigued by secrets and mysteries.

Displays this Month on Special Needs and Women's History Month March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Our Circulation Manager, Claire Stairiker, has created a display, working with the local group Strides, to bring greater awareness of disabilities and available resources. Strides provides support education and awareness for parents of children with special learning needs. Pick up a brochure about Strides while visiting the exhibit. The display features Chris Burke, Stephen Hawking, Temple Grandin, and Tom Cruise, well known people with developmental disabilities. The library has many books and other resources on a variety of disabilities, such as autism and dyslexia. The library also has parenting collections to assist parents with children with special learning needs. To learn more, see the display on the first floor of the library. Claire created a second display for Women's History Month. Check out the many famous women and books by them and about them in the first floor reading room. One of these new display cases was a gift from the Haddonfield Friends of the Library with assistance from local resident Sharon Parker. Thanks to them, you will see rotating displays and collections to alert you to what is available @ your library! Check it out and meet Claire Stairker, our creative display manager! If you want to use the library's display case, Ms. Stairiker is the person to see. This month the Interfaith Caregivers has a display in the public display case. The Interfaith Caregivers partner with the library to provide home delivery of library materials. Contact either IFC or the library for information on this program. |

And the Oscar Goes to ....
If you watched the Academy Awards last weekend, you know that 2012 had an outstanding group of films nominated for best picture. The library is circulating these films. About 25% of our circulation of library materials is of audiovisual materials. We also circulate many television series DVDs, such as all of the seasons of Downton Abbey, Mad Men, and lots more. Reserve these titles from our online catalog, call or stop in. The Express DVDs circulate for three days and may be more readily available. The library also has a strong collection of books on CD. If you commute or are going on a trip in the car, get a book on CD to make your trip more pleasant. This includes many best sellers and lots of excellent non-fiction. Have you been wanting to listen to Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin? The current movie Lincoln is taken from this fine historical work. Check it out! It's all availalble @ your library! If we don't have it, we have a fine borrowing network so there is a very good chance we can get it. ILL Coordinator Jeanne Mugler gets those hard to find items! Visit here for information on ILL borrowing.

Try the Home Improvement Reference Center
Home Improvement Reference Center is a resource that provides detailed, user-friendly "how-to" information about home improvements and repairs. HIRC includes magazine articles and reference content as well as videos and images designed to help homeowners tackle home repairs safely. The database provides the latest step-by-step information along with background information and basic tips on topics including electrical, plumbing, woodworking, outdoor projects, maintenance and decorating.
Use your library card to enter the portal and easily search the many available resources in one spot for do it yourself projects. This quality resource is made possible by shared services of the NJ Library Network as funded by the NJ State Library. For a demonstration or for other information, visit the library's Reference librarians at the first floor desk. |
Library Closings in Storms and Bad Weather The library generally follows the lead of the Borough of Haddonfield and the Haddonfield School System in closings during inclement weather. No fines are levied when the library is closed for bad weather. We want the public and our staff to be safe and that is the Library Board's first priority. You can get information on weather or emergency closings from the message on our telephone system (call 429-1304) or it will be posted on our home page at www. haddonfieldlibrary.org Best wishes for a safe winter! |
