Jumping for a Cause
Jump Rope for Heart

Our school is participating in a very special community service program to raise funds for the American Heart Association. We are jumping to fight against our nation's #1 and #3 killers: cardiovascular diseases and stroke.  Our Annual Jump Rope for Heart event helps students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and heart health, and teaches children the value of giving back to those in need. See the attached flyer for how to earn the bonus of sliming Coach Tanner and Principal Torres eating Puppy Chow!  Heart disease affects every family, so help us support the American Heart Association, as they help people live longer, healthier lives! Contact Coach Tanner with questions.

Look for flyers in your child's backpack.  To donate online, please go to www.heart.org/jump

Cleaning Out the Closets?
Save Some Items for PES!
Collections of Legos and Books to Come -- Start Saving Now!

Sneakers too!

The Rotary Club of Miami Dadeland Pinecrest is collecting old and worn sneakers to benefit schools and scholarship programs in the Pinecrest area.  Mayor Cindy Lerner is asking all of its residents and business to help the Rotary Club by bringing pairs of old and worn sneakers to the Pinecrest Community Center.  We also have a collection box in the Media Center.  When dropping off the donation sneakers please tie each pair together.  Sums received for the sneakers will be dedicated by the Rotary Club to be used for the scholarship school program.  Each year the Rotary Club of Miami Dadeland Pinecrest has donated thousands of dollars towards school supplies, curriculum and deserving students.

We will soon begin collecting Legos for a new project at school, so please round up those bricks you no longer need! Also, we will have our first Used Book Sale at Fun Fest this year (February 20), so if you're clearing your bookshelves, start bringing in those books to the collection box in the Media Center!

If you're interested in helping out with either of these projects, please contact Janet Hodur at janethdot@yahoo.com. Thanks as always for your support!

DVD Collection
Girl Scout Service Project

Sara Alessa, Gaby Perez, Maia Wenger and Maddie Wise, all alumni from Palmetto Elementary, are working on their Girl Scouts silver award. They are collecting used DVDs which they plan to donate to Miami Children's Hospital, with DVD players, for the kids waiting for surgery and chemotherapy. They have placed a collection box by the Birthday Book club display in the Media Center.  If you have used DVDs (PG and G) that would like to donate, please place them by the box.

Thank you!

Head Lice Tips

It's Head Lice Season!

Since we are in the height of head lice season, and as a means to minimize the spreading of head lice, please remember to remain vigilant and check your children for head lice periodically.

In the event that your child does contract head lice, please DO NOT send him/her to school. Instead, contact your doctor for recommended treatments, shampoo, cream rinse, or lotion.  Wash all your sheets in very hot water; place pillows, stuffed animals and plush toys in a plastic bag tightly sealed for 2 weeks; vacuum all carpets and upholstery furniture in your home or car, and soak ALL hair-care items in rubbing alcohol.

And please contact our staff/faculty to notify the school about any head lice incident so that the classroom may be properly checked and treated. Let's try to be a head lice free school!

PTA Membership
We Need You!

More than ever, we need the Palmetto Elementary Community to support our PTA. The PTA is an organization dedicated to improving our children's scholastic lives through its fundraising efforts during the school year. The easiest way to contribute is by purchasing one of our membership packages - click here for details and forms needed to join. Anyone can join - including grandparents, and your contribution funds programs and activities that directly impact our children's academic experience at Palmetto Elementary.

Membership is not tied to any volunteer commitments, but rather is a way to show your support for the programs and events that the PTA provides. Don't miss out on this very significant opportunity...
