Recycling Corner
(Mon-Fri in Media Center)
We are collecting:
--Batteries (no car batteries
--Laser and ink jet printer cartridges
--Aluminum pop tabs (for Ronald McDonald house)
In an effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle, our lunchroom has a new bin for up-cycling lunchbox chip baggies. The chip bag collection will reduce waste while earning money for our school through Terracycle. We also welcome PES families to drop off their Single Serve, King or Family size SALTY snack bags. See the following flyer: Chip Bag Brigade Accepted Waste. The more bags we collect, like Box Tops, the more $ is raised for our school.
Junior Troop 420 is undertaking this project for their "Bronze Award" leadership adventure to bring awareness to the school/community and make a difference in the world. By collecting and measuring the bags used throughout the year they hope to teach our children that making a small daily change in what we consume can make a big difference!

Box Tops
Our goal this year is to earn $1,900, That works out to 8,000 individual Box Tops. We can use this cash to buy the things we need. This year we're planning to use the money to support ACT.
We need you to clip Box Tops to raise money for ACT! Please turn in your Box Tops to your class or the front office labeled with your child's and teacher's name (for credit for individual and class prizes).
It's easy! Look for Box Tops on hundreds of your favorite General Mills products. For more information, visit the Box Tops website at boxtops4education.com or contact Jennifer Bermudez at jenna811@aol.com.

A Message From Our School Counselor

 Bullying or Normal Student Conflict?
M-DCPS and Palmetto Elementary School are committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students. At Palmetto, we have been a No Place for Hate school for the last two years and are currently working on achieving this designation for our third year. The No Place for Hate designation is awarded by the Anti-Defamation League to schools that develop projects that enhance the appreciation of diversity and foster harmony amongst diverse groups. The program promotes respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice, bigotry, name-calling, and bullying. At Palmetto, our projects include our annual Peace Week activities, bullying prevention initiatives, peer mediators, student allies and peacemakers, and our Super Hero program which includes the recognition of the display of positive character traits and helping others. We encourage a climate of inclusiveness among the student population.
Bullying and normal student conflict are very distinct from each other. The chart below is provided to help parents and students understand the differences. Students are instructed to report bullying or suspected bullying incidents to an adult at school. Reports may be made by telling a teacher, school counselor or administrator, or a bullying report form may be filled out and placed in Mrs. Astuto's mailbox in the Media Center or in the school's main office. Reports are thoroughly investigated before any determinations are made. If the bullying is indeed occurring, parents will be notified and appropriate steps will be taken to ensure that the bullying stops. Support and a safety plan will be developed for the target or victim of the bullying as well as counseling for the student doing the bullying.
Reporting can also be done anonymously via the M-DCPS Student Services website: http://studentservices.dadeschools.net by clicking on Bullying and Harassment and then Anonymous Reporting Form. A third way to report incidents is through the Parent Portal by clicking on Be Safe under Parent Resources.

PTA Membership |
This year more than ever, we need the Palmetto Elementary Community to support our PTA. The PTA is an organization dedicated to improving our children's scholastic lives through its fundraising efforts during the school year. The easiest way to contribute is by purchasing one of our membership packages - click here for details and forms needed to join. Anyone can join - including grandparents - and your contribution funds programs and activities that directly impact our children's academic experience at Palmetto Elementary.
Membership is not tied to any volunteer commitments, but rather is a way to show your support for the programs and events that the PTA provides. Don't miss out on this very significant opportunity...
