Volunteer Spotlight

Karolen Linderman

I moved to Del Mar in 1986 and had my own business---a number of furniture stores called HomePlace. When the next chapter started in 2000, I worked at SignOnSanDiego and the Union Tribune selling online advertising and was also the project manager for The San Diego Eldercare Directory which was published annually. I learned so much about the needs of seniors and the resources available in San Diego through that experience. I loved it and met some amazing people along the way. I retired in 2010.

I first learned about DMCC through Teddy Hopper, a dear friend and one of DMCC's founding members. Both Teddy and Lucy Zizka, another Board member, told me about all of the wonderful things DMCC was doing for the local senior community and encouraged me to get involved. I joined the Board in 2008 and can't begin to tell you what a rich experience it has been. I have met some truly amazing, interesting, kind and generous people---both on the DMCC Board and the people we serve in Del Mar. And it has been wonderful learning more about the community where I live.

I was very involved with starting DMCC's pilot In Home Connections Program, but we didn't have the funds to sustain it--always a challenge in the non-profit world. DMCC now has the Tuesday Lunch Connection group which meets twice a month in our community building to share food and friendship. I so enjoy helping out there. I also love driving seniors to medical appointments. It's definitely a feel good experience--and oh some of the life stories I have heard--WOW! One of the areas where I think I have been able to help the most has been as a liaison between DMCC and St. Peter's Church where we have been able to have so many of our fun events. I'm no longer on the Board, but continue to help when and where I can.

Thank you DMCC for all that you do! My connection to the community is so much fuller with DMCC!

So gratefully yours,

Karolen Linderman
