John Coughlin    1938-2014

John Coughlin's contributions to beautifying Del Mar can be found from our parks to lagoon to city streets. Some of those most visible and enduring efforts can be seen in the benches he built and are located throughout Seagrove Park, Powerhouse Park, and  San Dieguito Lagoon; less visible but endearing is the work he did with floral areas at the annual Fair, and with children's plant entries.

A longtime member of the Parks and Recreation Committee, John and his wife, Jill, also were active members of the Garden Club and other Del Mar volunteer entities.

John met his wife Jill at USC and they celebrated their 50-year anniversary in November. John joined the Navy after college and then went to dental school at Loyola in Chicago. He practiced dentistry for 35 years in Encinitas. He is survived by his wife, Jill, and daughters Cathy and Laurie.

A celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, May 2, at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Del Mar.
