Women, War & Industry
Thursday, February 14, 2014
9:30 am - 2:30 pm
San Diego Museum of Art Van Excursion

During the twentieth century, war and increased industrialization have led to major changes in the lives of women: their roles in their families, the way in which they dress, and the manner in which they are perceived in the public sphere. Women, War, and Industry examines the myriad ways in which women have been represented in relation to war and industry in modern and contemporary art created in the United States.
Round out a perfect day at the Museum with a casual, yet elegant no-host meal at the Sculpture Court Café. Choose a leisurely sit-down luncheon with table service, or order from the counter and enjoy casual seating next to the garden.

Volunteer Spotlight

 Meet Phyllis Mirsky

One of DMCC's successful new programs started in 2013 was the TLC-Too program, which is geared to our older, less active seniors. With the help of our dedicated volunteers, DMCC provides van service to and from the Del Mar Community Building, lunch prepared by one of our local restaurants, an educational or cultural program, and an opportunity for socializing with old and new friends. Long time Del Mar resident Phyllis Mirsky is one of our dedicated volunteers who helps make the program a continued success.

Phyllis has lived in Del Mar since 1982, having moved from the Washington DC area to accept a position in the UCSD Libraries. She was hired by Penny Abell (one of the founding Board members of DMCC) to serve as an Assistant University Librarian for the Science Libraries. When she retired in 2005, Phyllis was Deputy University Librarian.  Phyllis currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the UCSD Emeriti Association and is also a mentor in its program for Chancellor's Scholars (students who are the first generation in their families to attend a four year college). In addition, Phyllis serves on the Fund Raising Committee for Women's Empowerment International, an organization that provides microloans and other support to women in several countries as well as in San Diego County. In her spare time, she reads and participates in two book clubs, does aerobics and Pilates, and travels the world.

Penny Abell introduced Phyllis to DMCC about 14 years ago, when the organization was in its infancy. At that time, Phyllis assisted with the planning of DMCC's first website. However, because of other obligations, it was not until the spring of 2013 that she began volunteering at DMCC on a regular basis. With the kick-off of TLC-Too, Phyllis was available and pleased to assist. On the first and third Tuesdays of every month, Phyllis adeptly shifts from acting as a van host when seniors are brought to and from the Community Building and staffing the check-in table to serving meals, bussing dishes, and performing as chief dishwasher. She steps in wherever help is needed, but her favorite moments are when she converses with our TLC-Too participants. Phyllis especially enjoys the sense that what she is doing helps others.

Thank you, Phyllis, for being a model volunteer. DMCC could not operate without devoted volunteers like you!
