Volunteer Spotlight

 Meet Arlene Lighthall

Long time Del Mar resident Arlene Lighthall is a Del Mar Community Connections "original," having served on the committee that formed DMCC in 1999. Her reason for serving was simple--"[DMCC] fills a special need in the community." Following the founding of DMCC, Arlene went on to serve two terms on DMCC's Board of Directors. She reveled in the dynamic enthusiasm that charged each Board meeting and the range of expertise of its members.

Over the years with DMCC, Arlene has been the "go to" person for travel and excursions. She especially enjoyed organizing and leading a DMCC group of 19 travelers on a trip to northeastern Spain in 2001. Other excursions have been closer to home, including a number of museum trips to Los Angeles. Over 200 local residents have taken excursions with her.

She has written travel articles for the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and various other papers and magazines as well as local articles about her experiences using public transportation--buses and the Coaster. And, most recently, after DMCC moved into the Del Mar Community Building, Arlene started the DMCC Travel Club. Participants get together once a month to talk about diverse travel related subjects, like past travel experiences, trips they want to take, tips for saving money and getting reservations, insurance, using credit cards overseas, earning airline miles and using them for award travel.

Although one of Arlene's favorite activities is travel, she has been active in many other arenas. In addition to teaching for 22 years in the Letters Department at Mira Costa Community College, Arlene was on both the committee that drew up Del Mar's General Plan and the Traffic Parking Advisory Committee. She also belongs to University Women, enjoys a book group (and recently wrote and published a book about a German family's experiences at the end of World War II (Tomorrow, My Son)), gardens, volunteers at local theaters (La Jolla Playhouse, North Coast Rep, New Village Arts, Lyceum, Cygnet), belongs to St. Peter's Episcopalian Church and is on its Seniors on the Go committee, engages in independent study, and belongs to Publishers and Writers of San Diego. In her "spare" time, Arlene visits family in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Thank you ever so much, Arlene, for always having time for DMCC!
