Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Carly Michaels

carly michaels

Carly Michaels is a relative newcomer to Del Mar, having moved to the area with her husband Harold and daughter Holly in July 2010. Carly has always enjoyed volunteering as a way of "giving back". With a knack for being a life coach--helping and encouraging people--volunteering came naturally to her. While Holly was growing up, Carly was involved with the PTA, and served on its Board. She also volunteered at her synagogue. She adds, "I learned there were so many opportunities to volunteer in many different ways when my daughter was earning community service hours." When Holly left for college, Carly looked forward to the diversity of volunteer opportunities as an "empty nester".

Del Mar Community Connections thanks volunteer Chrissy Fried for leading Carly to DMCC. As a neighbor and dear friend, Chrissy told Carly about her volunteer activities with DMCC. Wanting to "give back" with "want-tos" rather than "have-tos", Carly likes that with DMCC, she can make her own schedule and choose projects and programs that are interesting to her. It is also a great perk that DMCC is within her personal community. Carly has now been volunteering with DMCC for almost a year, mostly as a volunteer driver. She likes the convenience of receiving in advance a complete roster of rider needs and being able to choose what fits her schedule. Carly also acts as a van host for weekly shopping trips and helps with office tasks such as addressing and stuffing envelopes.

Carly especially enjoys providing rides, and shares recipes with one of her riders who is a former food critic. According to Carly, "I bring her treats when I pick her up, and haven't had a bad review yet!" Carly further reflects, "I know all the people I drive appreciate my time and effort and comaraderie, but really the gratitude is all mine. The pleasure I get from being with the men and woman for whom I volunteer is immensely fulfilling. Their stories are so intriguing and enlightening. I have learned so much from their experiences. Because we are captured in the car, our conversations are uninterrupted. It's funny when I think, gee I am middle aged being in my 50's, but most of the people I am with are over 80 and into their 90's. Their 'get up and go' is inspiring and has definitely made me re-think how I want or need to conduct myself growing into my older age."

A surprise extra for Carly when she found her way to DMCC is that she discovered her cousin, Beth Levine! When Carly called DMCC to offer her volunteer services, Beth answered the call. Carly knew she had a cousin who lived in Del Mar, but it was quite serendipitous that she would find Beth by volunteering with an organization for which they both have a passion!

DMCC and your many riders thank you, Carly, for your assistance and your passion for helping seniors who no longer drive continue to get out and about!
