Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Chris Engelbrecht

Long time DMCC volunteer Chris Engelbrecht started her volunteer career at the age of 16, as a Candy Striper at the Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. Although she thoroughly enjoyed helping the patients, at some point Chris realized she could get paid for her work and gave up volunteering. Moving to beautiful Del Mar in 1975, Chris worked for many years at UCSD as a financial aid counselor. She left UCSD in 1990 to raise her family in the warmth of the Del Mar community. Chris was called back to volunteering via her children, helping out in the classrooms at Del Mar Hills Elementary School. Chris also sat on the Boards of the Del Mar Boys & Girls Club, Sandy Hill Nursery School, and the Cub Scouts Del Mar Pack.
Chris was first introduced to DMCC and its Volunteer Driver Program in 2001, when she started driving her neighbor to medical appointments. She signed up as a volunteer driver and never looked back. Chris soon became the Coordinator of the Volunteer Driver Program. She then joined the DMCC Board of Directors and, at different times, served as Secretary and Vice-President. Chris has also chaired numerous committees and events, including many fundraisers. According to Chris, "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with everyone involved with DMCC and especially love getting to know the riders that I have driven. The depth of life's experiences that each person has shared with me is heartwarming and also a learning experience. It has been the greatest reward to have been able to get to know my riders on a personal level and to occasionally share a lunch or coffee together." It's no surprise that Chris was named DMCC's 2011 Volunteer of the Year.
In addition to volunteering with DMCC, Chris volunteers with the Women's History Museum. She enjoys her two wonderful granddaughters, travel, and participating in many other activities that keep her busy and happy. All of us at DMCC are fortunate to have Chris in our midst. Many thanks for all you do for DMCC and our community, Chris!
