Volunteer Spotlight
Larry Brooks

Before retiring to Del Mar in 1995, Larry Brooks had two careers. The first was with the U.S. Coast Guard, from which he retired as a Captain. The second was with Chevron, where he conducted arctic environmental research. He spent his first few years in Del Mar remodeling a decrepit house room by room. In 1998, he and Martha reunited after 30+ years, and they were married on Cinco de Mayo, 1999, on the beach in Kauai at sunrise.
Larry's first foray as a volunteer was a member of the City Council's Airport Advisory Committee which was founded to deal with the ramifications of Lindbergh Field's possible move to, then, NAS Miramar. Their focus soon changed to dealing with the move of MCAS El Toro to Miramar where they were successful in legal action with DOD to minimize the noise of Miramar aircraft in Del Mar.
While Larry was with the AAC, he took on the task of preserving the historical photograph collection of the Del Mar Historical Society. which was mainly of 8x10 prints in 3-ring binders stored anywhere and everywhere. Larry began digitizing and tagging the more than 2000 images and he continues this task as the collection grows.
Larry became fully aware of DMCC's programs when Pete Glaser asked him to assist with the implementation of the Brain Fitness program. Larry says the first program with Carol Mason, Karen Lockwood, and Peg & Gene Humphrey was a very enjoyable and enlightening experience. He continues as Pete's backup for this program.
Other volunteer activities include helping Lucy Zizka with DMCC's computer tutoring, and being an ex-officio member of DMVA's Board of Directors. Also, Larry was a volunteer in the Carlsbad City Library Genealogy Department for several years.
At the DMCC Volunteer reception in June 2012 Pat JaCoby gave Larry a tour of the newly-acquired DMUSD building and explained how it was to become the offices of DMCC and DM Foundation. Larry used his house renovation experience to assist with rehabilitating the building. Indeed, he was the "Renovator-in-Chief" and could be seen almost daily demolishing, rebuilding, repairing, and painting various parts of the building. Larry continues to stop by for touch up projects.
In his "spare" time, Larry enjoys digital photography, genealogy and traveling to spend time with his and Martha's five children and twelve grandchildren. Larry is enjoying a very rich and full retirement with his many activities in Del Mar and thanks the community for these opportunities. Also, he recommends that all Del Mar residents look around for such opportunities.
Thanks for sharing your many talents with DMCC, Larry!

Meet Jenelle Zingg
DMCC is pleased to present Jenelle Zingg as our new part-time Assistant Program Director.
Jenelle moved to North San Diego County in 2006 from Phoenix where she taught elementary school for five years and completed her MA in Education. She grew up running a Bed & Breakfast with her mom and sister in their historic home in Evansville, Wisconsin. Upon moving from Arizona to San Diego, she vowed never to take this beautiful weather and beach access for granted. Jenelle spends her free time playing beach volleyball, dancing salsa, learning how to cook, singing karaoke, and traveling as much as possible. She is enthusiastic about getting to know everyone and contributing to the DMCC community!
We hope you will stop in and introduce yourself to Jenelle when you are in the DM Community Building.
