Volunteer Spotlight
Pete Glaser

A Del Mar resident since 1985, Pete Glaser worked in TRW's Avionics Division until his retirement in 1996. He first connected with DMCC shortly after its inception, in 2000. At the time, he was President of the Del Mar Television Foundation Board of Directors, and asked Nancy Weare, Founder of DMCC,

if DMTV could create a video about how DMCC got its start. That video is still available. Pete was involved with a number of other DMTV videos including, the building of the decorated wall in front of the Del Mar Library,an interview with architect Joe Nelle on the refurbishment of the Powerhouse, an oral history of Al Tarkington and his time on the Del Mar City Council, and the taping of Del Mar Foundation summer concerts and First Thursdays events.

Pete volunteered with several other Del Mar organizations and committees before finding a niche in DMCC's Brain Fitness Program. He was active as a member of the Friends of the Del Mar Library Board of Directors and worked to oversee the installation of the computers in the Library's new computing center. Pete also served on the Board of Directors of the Del Mar Historical Society, and volunteered with the Friends of the Powerhouse and the Train Whistle Elimination Committee.

About three years ago, Pete learned about Posit Science's Brain Fitness Program, which is aimed at speeding up auditory processing and improving memory. When he found out that DMCC would be offering the course, he jumped at the opportunity. As it turned out, however, he became a Brain Fitness "coach" before completing the course himself. Since then, he has been overseeing the Program, making sure that the computers function properly and the course runs smoothly for all participants. Fully dedicated to the success of the Program, Pete was instrumental in DMCC's acquisition of four computers from the San Diego Futures Foundation. Because of space limitations at its former office location, DMCC did not have a regular home for the Brain Fitness Program until the organization moved into the Del Mar Community Building in August. Pete is thrilled with DMCC's new computer lab, and took great pride when 10 students completed the most recent course and received their diplomas in mid-December. So far, 35 individuals have completed the course.

Pete sees the benefits he has acquired from completing the Brain Fitness course, and is very gratified by the positive feedback he hears from other participants in the Program. Encouraged by this feedback, Pete succeeded in obtaining a grant from the Del Mar Foundation to start a social networking program. Now that the Community Building has Wi-Fi, seniors will be able to use the computer lab to become familiar with Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks, and ultimately create a Del Mar social network. Instructional classes are being planned to start in 2013. Looking forward to more program offerings at the DMCC computer lab, Pete hopes to acquire Posit Science's new Brain HQ program, to use as a refresher course for Brain Fitness graduates.

DMCC's computer lab could not succeed without you, Pete. Thank you!
