Attitude of Gratitude

& Holiday Baskets 2012 Food Drive

When life gets hectic and you begin to feel overwhelmed, take a moment to focus on the people and things you are grateful for in life. When you are grateful, other things will fall by the wayside.  During the month of November, DMCC invites you to come into the Community Building lobby and help our "Gratitude Tree" grow!  We'll have paper leaves in fall colors on which to write something that you are grateful for and then tie your "leaf of thanks" to the Gratitude Tree.  We hope you'll bring a non-perishable item of food or new, unwrapped toy for Holiday Baskets 2012 to drop in our collection box in the lobby, too.  Our thanks to Del Mar Armstrong Nursery for providing our Gratitude Tree!

2012 Volunteer of the Year
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Matt Szymczak

Acupuncture and Massage Center to volunteer with Dr. Mark Kalina at the DMCC Senior Health Forum. He engages Forum participants through Tai Chi, Chi Kung, and meditation, prior to discussions on a variety of health and well-being topics.  Although Dr. Kalina takes the lead in these discussions, Matt remains at the sessions and provides his own heart-felt input.

Matt began meditation 40 years ago, in 1972.  While in college at UC Berkeley in 1978, he got interested in Tai Chi.  In 1979, Matt moved to San Diego to study Chinese medicine. He learned Chi Kung from SiFu (teacher) Share K. Lew, a temple trained Taoist Monk from Yellow Dragon Monastery on Luo Fo Mountain in Southern China. Matt subsequently taught classes for Lew in Germany and San Diego. Matt holds a Holistic Health Practitioner's Certification, and is Board certified in Acupuncture Orthopedics (treatment of soft tissue injuries, low back injuries, sciatica, and the like). He has worked at Encinitas Acupuncture and Massage since 1989.

Matt has learned seven systems of Chi Kung, which he shares in his private practice, as well as with the DMCC Senior Health Forum participants. He adapts what he teaches to meet the needs of his audience, so that individuals of all ages can participate equally. Matt fondly recalls a recent Senior Health Forum session where the group held a Chi Kung pose while looking out at the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful clouds above and beyond. He sensed that the participants were feeling a connection and unity with one another, as well as with the universe around them.

Several things drew Matt to DMCC and the Senior Health Forum. It was Dr. Kalina who diagnosed Matt with a life-threatening illness in 2008. When Matt was recovering and regaining his strength, Dr. Kalina invited him to help out at the Forum. Having faced life and death issues, Matt could share his experiences with the group in a very personal manner. He also was drawn to DMCC as a way to remember his mother, who lives 700 miles away. Matt is able to help people here, as others help his mother where she resides.

Matt thoroughly enjoys his time at the Senior Health Forum. He says the participants are "just solid, good people." Waxing philosophical, Matt notes that as people age, "they become less egotistical; they accept themselves and accept other people." He especially takes pleasure in the fact that there is "no one-upsmanship" during the Senior Health Forum sessions. To Matt, "it's the perfect playground." No wonder that Matt was totally surprised when he was recently honored at the DMCC annual gala as Volunteer of the Year. When Board President Nate McCay announced his name, Matt thought there was some mistake. No mistake, Matt Szymczak is a most honorable volunteer!
