November 26, 2012

Greetings!

Steve Carlin
The weeks after Thanksgiving are always time for reflection and gratitude. This holiday season, be sure to consider giving to your favorite charity and supporting local businesses and important causes. We are fortunate, but others need our help more than ever before. This is a good time to make a difference.

Also, congratulations to all who participated in Flavor! Napa Valley earlier this month. The valley was buzzing with chefs, winemakers and guests from around the area and throughout the nation. With the success of the Napa Valley Film Festival and Flavor! Napa Valley, November is becoming one of the busiest months in our beautiful valley. Hope you had a chance to enjoy one or both of these events.

See you at the Market!

Specials this Week

HIGHWAY 1 FONTINA STYLEHighway One

Oxbow Cheese Merchant is offering the Highway 1, a cow's milk cheese from Valley Ford, California as its Friends of Oxbow special this week at 15% off.
Made by the Valley Ford Cheese Company in California this farmstead cheese is made of 100% Jersey cow's milk in a fontina style. It is aged for over 80 days to reach its maximum complexity. It is mildly fruity with a nutty flavor and aroma. As a fontina this cheese pairs well with Italian wines and foods. Highway One is their version of an old style fontina with a texture that is silky and creamy. Highway 1 is another farmstead product from their closed herd of jerseys in Valley Ford. Mountain View Jerseys is a 640-acre dairy farm in Western Sonoma County, continuously operated by the same family since 1918. Paul Bianchi and his two children Karen Bianchi-Moreda and Steve Bianchi currently own and operate Mountain View Jerseys. This soft, fruity, creamy cheese matches the dry Riesling in intensity and complements the flavors wonderfully.

BROOKS RIESLING FROM OREGON Brooks

The 2009 Brooks Riesling from Willamette Valley, Oregon is the Friends of Oxbow special at Oxbow Wine Merchant this week. Yes, this is a Riesling; NO, it is not sweet at all. This classic Oregon Riesling is bone dry, mineral driven, with a touch of petroleum that tends to develop when it is well aged. This tastes like Riesling, yet without the residual sugar that often is found in the wines of many producers. The wine drinking public has continually avoided this noble grape capable of producing some of the world's finest, longest lived wines. Oxbow Wine Merchant believes this is due to the wine's reputation for being off-dry and that is a shame. The Wine Merchant hopes this lip-smacking, refreshing beauty will prove that this grape can produce high acid, crisp, dry wines that exhibit loads of minerals laced with citrus fruit. The exceptionally long, lingering finish is clean and crisp making the wine extremely refreshing and versatile. It is a great bargain for the price and pairs well with a wide variety of dishes including smoked trout, delicate fish, spicy foods, salads and much more, but can easily be enjoyed on its own!  Both the Brooks Riesling and the matching cheese are 15% off this week only.
