Sewage Site Selection: Chamber Principles
Earlier this week, Chamber CEO Catherine Holt gave The Chamber's perspective on the CRD's sewage treatment project's site selection on CFAX 1070 (interview at minute 34:15) and on CBC Radio.

In these interviews, Catherine outlines how The Chamber's four principles for a successful project, which are that it will:

1. protect Greater Victoria's reputation
2. be the lowest cost to taxpayers,
3. minimize impacts on business, and
4. be completed.

Last week, the CRD's Core Area Wastewater Treatment Project Board publicly released an interim report identifying three shortlisted options for the siting of the CRD Core Area Wastewater Treatment facility.

The next steps in the process are for the Project Board to determine a single site for the plant in its final report, which will be made public and delivered to CRD board members on September 7.

StatsCan Thanks Chamber for Support!

On Aug 31. Chamber CEO Catherine Holt received a thank-you note from Wayne R. Smith, Chief Statistician, Statistic Canada. In the note, he said:

Canadians' response rate of 97.8 per cent to the 2016 long form is the best ever recorded. With the active participation by 9 in 10 Canadian households who completed their short and long-form questionnaire without assistance from Statistics Canada, and the world-record Internet response rate of 68.3 per cent, 2016 is undeniably the most efficient among traditional censuses conducted in the world.

These impressive results coupled with an overall collection response rate of 98.4 per cent will yield high-quality information for virtually all communities across Canada.

Statistics Canada now shifts its focus to dissemination with a first data release on February 8, 2017, launching an accelerated release schedule that will provide Canadians with all census data within 18 months of collection.

"I - as well many others - am eagerly looking forward to the data release, which will provide accurate insights into our region," said Catherine. "Thanks to those who took the time to fill out the 2016 Census. Its high participation rate will ensure data is relevant, precise and accurate."

Ground-breaking Veterinary Education Software

Two major post-secondary institutions - the University of Pennsylvania and the Western College of Veterinary Medicine - have adopted EasyAnatomy, LlamaZOO Interactive Inc.'s ground-breaking veterinary education software. The interactive software incorporates MRI and CT scans into its detailed 3D models of animal anatomy and is available to anyone with an online subscription.

"Anatomy has always been a difficult subject to learn and teach," says Dr. Chris Clark, an Associate Dean at Western College of Veterinary Medicine. "EasyAnatomy is a novel tool that allows students to explore and understand anatomy in a way that's never been possible before."

BC Politicians Set to Unify Voice

Marijuana shops to amalgamation will be up for debate when politicians gather at the 2016 Union of BC Municipalities Convention in Victoria Sept. 26 to 30.

The resolutions that pass will become part of UBCM's advocacy platform, carrying the weight of its unified membership comprised of its 180+ municipalities and regional governments.

Greater Victoria local governments are asking UBCM membership to endorse resolutions such as: building codes (Saanich), home affordability (CRD), forced amalgamations (Metchosin), national pharmacare program (Victoria), and Island Corridor Foundation (Langford).

"The UBCM conference is a reminder of the role local governments play in the economic development of communities across BC," said Chamber CEO Catherine Holt. "Many of these resolutions are of direct interest to the Greater Victoria business community, and are being closely monitored by The Chamber."
