From Business Leaders Luncheons to the End of Summer Soirée, The Chamber has lots of exciting events lined up for the fall. See them all on the event calendar.
Taxing Times

Two simple tenets of business - competition is good and taxes can create barriers - are now being examined jointly by the provincial government's B.C. Commission on Tax Competitiveness.

Public engagement has begun on how to improve British Columbia's competitiveness through changes to PST and other business taxes. Originally introduced in 1948, times have changed and there has been a seismic shift in the way that business in conducted as we move into a more global economic force.

The Chamber invites you to share with us, and the commission, your feedback on what can be done to improve our competitiveness and modernize our provincial tax system. Make sure your voice is heard. Email The Chamber or provide your feedback directly to the commission. Deadline September 30, 2016.

Shaking Up Earthquake Alerts

Scientists in Victoria have successfully placed the first offshore earthquake sensor along the seabed off Vancouver Island.  It will be part of a network of seismic sensors at the Cascadian subduction zone, a fault that is expected to produce a severely damaging earthquake within the next 50 years.

"We are the first really in the world to do this offshore," said Kate Moran, president of Ocean Networks Canada, based at the University of Victoria
Once the network is complete it will provide up to 90 seconds of warning when a major earthquake strikes. That could be enough time to help people to take cover and to protect critical infrastructure. Work is underway to integrate these alerts in social media feeds.

Making Parking in Victoria Fun and Functional

Parkades aren't usually thought of as fun places, but now the Bastion Square Parkade on Yates St. is home to a colourful - and musical - new art project.
The musical interactive railing allows people climbing the staircase to make music by simply touching the railings.

The City of Victoria's new Parking Ambassadors Program is generating goodwill and the current forecast for the new parking regime is between $500,000-$900,000 more than budgeted.

Park Victoria app

The city's five parkades are averaging a total of about 122,000 transactions a month this year, about 15,000 more than last year. Parkades are typically reaching capacity between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm daily. As well, the city is seeing about 2,000 more on-street parking transactions downtown each month - no doubt due to tools like the Park Victoria app. and the City's new Parking Ambassadors.
