No Foreign Buyer Tax for Victoria
The provincial government released that numbers are more than doubling for foreign home buyers, yet Victoria will not be included in the new 15% foreign buyer tax.
As outlined in today's Times Colonist article, The province's data suggests that the role of foreign buyers is Vancouver-centric. For example, in the six-week period ending July 14, foreign buyers spent $1 billion on BC real estate, and 86% of that spending was in Metro Vancouver.
Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps said on CFAX yesterday that she is disappointed that it won't be applied locally, but the city will take a "wait and see approach".

Stocksy's Cooperative Approach Noticed by the New York Times
Profiled in the New York Times article A New Wrinkle in the Gig Economy, Stocksy United was praised as a cooperative that is owned and governed by the photographers who contribute their work to the site. Every Stocksy photographer owns a share of the company, with voting rights. The company pays them 50-75% of sales, which is well above the going rate of 15-45% that is typical in the stock photography field. Stocksy is part of a new wave of start-ups that are borrowing the tools of Silicon Valley to create a more genuine "sharing" economy that rewards the individuals generating the value.

A Book About CHEK
Victoria writer Diane Dakers has written a book about Victoria television station CHEK called CHEK Republic: A Revolution in Local Television. The book highlights how CHEK started in 1956 and has been a trailblazer in the television industry ever since. For example it set records for being the first independently owned TV station in BC, the first station in Canada to introduce colour telecasting, and - as of 2009 - the first employee-owned TV station in North America. Read an excerpt of the book in the Times Colonist here.
