"Topping Out" Celebrated at The Springs Apartments

APAH founders, leaders and elected officials sign the ceremonial beam.
On January 6,APAH welcomed elected officials, neighbors and project partners to the Topping Out of The Springs Apartments in Ballston, a construction milestone marking the building construction reaching its highest point. We honored the commitment of our partners in making The Springs possible. Guests got an inside look at the construction site and signed a commemorative beam that will be installed in the new building.

At the event, County Board Chair Libby Garvey remarked, "APAH is one of our key community partners. Today, only 9,600 Arlington apartments are affordable to the 17,000 low income families looking for housing in our community. With the targets set in the County's Master Plan, we are committed to keeping Arlington a place where people across the socioeconomic spectrum can live and work comfortably."

Additional speakers included: Rev. Dr. Bryan Mickle, Pastor of neighbor First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, Susan Bell, APAH Board member and Nina Janopaul, APAH President/CEO. The Springs will be completed later this year and provide affordable homes for 104 households as well as APAH's new headquarters.

Last week, APAH welcomed Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, Secretary of Commerce and Trade Maurice Jones, supporters and other nonprofits to Arlington Mill Community Center, where Gov. Alfonso Lopez for his leadership in creating the Trust Fund and introducing a 2016 bill (HB 972) to provide dedicated funding.

APAH is honored to be awarded a $750,000 Competitive Loan to support our Columbia Hills Apartments! The Housing Trust Fund is a valuable way to help reduce homeless and create affordable housing in the Commonwealth. Click here to learn more.
APAH Joins Community Literacy Day Honoring
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Led by Aspire! Afterschool Learning, APAH joined community partners for a children's day of international learning and a literacy fair in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. earlier this month.

Held at Arlington Presbyterian Church, 92 volunteers served children and families, including many APAH residents, by providing reading and arts activities focused on learning about cultural traditions and countries around the world.

In addition to Aspire!, partners included ArlingtonWorks!, Rocklands Barbeque and Grilling Company, Accenture, and eight embassies. Special thanks to volunteers and partners who made this day of learning a success!
Holiday Gift Drive Serves 409 Kids, 201 Families

Thank you to all our generous volunteers and donors who helped to make APAH's 2015 Holiday Gift Drive a success! All 409 children who signed up to participate received age-appropriate gifts during the holiday season. This year, parents were able to select the perfect gifts for their kids from the onsite Holiday Store, which were then wrapped by volunteers.

Thank you to all those who volunteered, led gift collection programs, donated and helped to make the holiday season brighter for APAH families!

Volunteer Spotlight: Kim Honor Matkovsky,
2015 Holiday Gift Drive Volunteer Chair

"Volunteering with APAH is the best part of my week!" says APAH volunteer Kim Honor Matkovsky. Like so many of us, Kim juggles work and family, with limited time to get more involved in the community.

This winter, Kim served as Volunteer Chair of our Holiday Gift Drive. She reached out to neighbors and friends, and recruited her kids and their friends to create holiday goodie bags for APAH families. She worked with philanthropic partners and many generous Arlingtonians who provided toys and volunteered.

Kim encourages anyone with the tiniest bit of time to give to get involved. To learn more, contact Venus Burgess, Volunteer & Resident Services Specialist, at vburgess@apah.org.

POPS: A Plan for our Places and Spaces

From February 4-6, you are invited to a public meeting to provide input on and ask questions about the changing needs for parks, recreation, and natural resources.

Meetings are located throughout Arlington and will feature interactive stations, presentations and opportunities for the public to provide input to help update Arlington's Public Spaces Master Plan. We encourage residents and housing supporters to speak for programs and facilities that can benefit Arlington's low income residents.
