A Season of Thanks
As 2015 comes to a close, we at APAH are struck by what an incredible year this has been! To all of our readers-our loyal supporters, partners, volunteers and community members interested in learning more about affordable housing- thank you! Our work is not possible without you. This year, this work includes:

The Springs Groundbreaking Celebration
|
Construction on The Springs Apartments in Ballston began in early 2015. We celebrated the groundbreaking in March and look forward to the opening in fall 2016. The 104-unit property will feature onsite resident services and house APAH's new headquarters.
In February, the Arlington County Board unanimously approved Columbia Hills Apartments, which will add 229 affordable homes in 2018. Just this month, the County Board approved Gilliam Place, an additional 173 affordable homes and community space. Thank you to the County Board, community supporters and all who helped make these plans a reality.
Thanks to donors and volunteers, we were able to expand opportunities and increase stability for our residents. This year, nearly 800 residents received support services such as eviction prevention and referrals. Over 1,500 residents attended at least one group program, and APAH residents received $386,960 of material donations through programs and group services.
After a three-year study and outreach process, the Affordable Housing Master Plan and Implementation Framework were unanimously adopted by the Arlington County Board in September. The Plan provides a vision and strategies to ensure that we can meet the needs of current and future residents of all income levels. APAH will honor the goals and vision of this Plan in 2016 and years to come.
Our work would not be possible without caring community members like you who are committed to keeping Arlington diverse and inclusive. Thank you, and I look forward to all we will accomplish together in 2016!

Located on the site of Arlington Presbyterian Church, APAH will keep the church's tradition of serving its neighbors by providing 173 affordable homes and community space to serve low income households and the surrounding community.
"We are grateful to the County Board for today's vote of support," said Nina Janopaul, APAH President/CEO, "We are honored that Arlington Presbyterian Church selected APAH as their partner for this extraordinary project. This approval helps move forward this amazing congregation's commitment to our community and Arlington County's vision to meet the goals of the Affordable Housing Master Plan."
Thank you to all those who supported this innovative partnership and commitment to affordable housing, including: the Arlington County Board, Arlington Presbyterian Church, VOICE, Arlington clergy and faith leaders and community members.

Money Smarts Pay Graduation Celebrates Residents and Volunteers working towards a Brighter 2016
Earlier this month, six Columbia Grove residents graduated from Money Smarts Pay, a financial education program in partnership with Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE). Graduates were joined by coaches, friends and family to celebrate the completion of this three-month program that combines classes with one-on-one financial coaching with Master Financial Education volunteer coaches. I n recognition of his enthusiasm and taking control of his personal finances, Mr. Jones was named Honor Graduate. Mr. Jones regularly met with his coach Lauren to tackle challenges, set goals and develop a plan. He applied skills learned in class to make significant progress.
At graduation, Mr. Jones remarked that his financial situation had almost "forced him" to be in the class, and he is very "thankful for the opportunity" and now "aware and focused" on his financial habits. He hopes to continue to work with Lauren and make progress on his financial goals in 2016. Congratulations to the graduates, and thank you to VCE and volunteer coaches for your time and expertise!
