County Board Approves FuturewrapsRosslyn Development Plan

APAH achieved an important milestone when the Arlington County Board approved the Western Rosslyn Area Planning Study (WRAPS) in July, following an extensive community process. APAH's aging, 39-unit Queens Court Apartments was approved for redevelopment to a 12-story multifamily building with approximately 250 affordable units and a 9,000 sq ft public park.

The WRAPS plan will bring new public and private benefits to an underutilized six acre site, including a new fire station, public school and parks. Many thanks to the WRAPS Working Group and County staff and board for their support.

Affordable Housing Master Plan Vote on September 19thhousingplanvote
Arlington's Affordable Housing Master Plan, which has been three years in the making, is scheduled for a County Board vote on September 19th. 13,500 affordable housing units were lost between 2000-2013, and we face a shortfall of 7,500 homes for the County's current low income population. This plan sets goals and identifies tools to address the massive loss of affordable homes.

APAH encourages you to support this thoughtful plan and its vision for Arlington's future. Share your views with the County Board by sending an email to countyboard@arlingtonva.us.
Pilot English Language ProgramESL
Launches at Arlington Mill

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia provided an 8-week intensive English language pilot program at Arlington Mill Residences this summer, thanks to funding from the Arlington Community Foundation. The program specially targeted residents with the greatest need for language services.

Wilma, who faithfully attended classes, reported feeling much more confident in her English skills and more willing to approach people to ask questions or voice concerns. As a mother of three, she was able to attend thanks to the childcare and enrichment activities offered by volunteers.

Volunteer Spotlight: Brittany Smithvolspotlight

Brittany has volunteered at APAH's Buchanan Gardens Apartments since September 2014. In the fall, she will study Creative Writing at the University of New Hampshire.

When I filled out APAH's volunteer application, I had a few ideas about what I would be doing. APAH needed a child care volunteer, so I knew I would be in charge of a group of kids. Maybe I would read with or to them. Maybe I would feed the kids cookies and juice. I would definitely take them outside to use up their seemingly endless supply of energy!

What I didn't expect was that I would become a part of this wonderful community. Click here to read Brittany's full story.
