Earth Day

Last month, more than 60 volunteers and community leaders participated in our Earth Day Community Clean Up, which included a stream cleanup and invasive species removal at Glencarlyn Park. Thanks to the help of the Arlington Regional Master Naturalists, volunteers removed dozens of bags of trash from the stream and invasive species from the trees and trail.

A group of APAH residents with special needs participated with help from Community Residences. They enjoyed working in the woods and received commendation from project leaders for their team's dedicated service.

Del. Alfonso Lopez (VA-49) kicked off the event and participated in the clean up. Del. Lopez and Sen. Barbara Favola (VA-31) joined forces to co-sponsor lunch for all the volunteers who worked hard on the project. The Columbia Forest and Arlington Mill Civic Associations helped organize the day of service and recruit volunteers. Arlington County Commuter Services provided information on the bike share program and green transit during the event.

socialmobilityLocation Matters: Arlington Ranks High in Social Mobility Report

A recent study from Harvard economists finds that Arlington County is among the best counties in the U.S. in helping poor children up the income ladder -better than about 81% of counties.

A child in Arlington is less likely to become a single parent, more likely to attend college and more likely to earn more income.

Factors contributing to strong upward mobility include quality schools, lower segregation, income inquality and violent crime rates, and a large share of two-parent homes.
