Arlington Mill Named Best Housing Development in Virginia
Last month, APAH's 122-unit Arlington Mill Residences received the highest award of Best Housing Development in Virginia during the 2014 Virginia Governor's Housing Conference Awards Luncheon in Norfolk, VA. The property is Arlington's first committed affordable housing community using Public Land for Public Good. Building Arlington Mill atop the County-built parking garage significantly reduced the cost of development. APAH used the funds saved to reduce the rent and provide more apartments for very low income households. It is the first new affordable development along Columbia Pike since revitalization efforts began through the Columbia Pike Neighborhood Plan. The Virginia Housing Awards recognize outstanding and innovative efforts in crafting effective solutions for Virginia's complex array of housing needs. It is the state's largest affordable housing event, and brought together nearly 800 affordable housing advocates, providers and policy makers. Click here for the full news release.

Warm Meals, Warm Hearts
Last month, APAH launched a 10-week partnership with La Cocina VA to deliver warm meals to APAH residents. La Cocina VA offers bilingual culinary training and educational programs on nutrition and healthy eating to support disadvantage members of minority groups. Through its new Food
Assistance Program, 60 healthy, ready-to-eat meals prepared by students of the Bilingual Culinary Training Program are delivered to residents at Arlington Mill, Buchanan Gardens and Columbia Grove. This program facilitates access to nutritional and affordable food options for our residents and other neighbors in need, and gives these students access to job training, so that they learn skills to find better paying jobs in the culinary and hospitality business. After only a few weeks, APAH residents are already very appreciative of these delicious meals!
