New Residents Exercise at Arlington Mill After the long winter, there is much activity in APAH's five properties that provide resident services programs. As residents move into Arlington Mill, APAH Resident Services is launchiing programs to meet the resident needs. Surveys showed that health and fitness are important to Arlington Mill residents and last Saturday residents participated in the first Zumba class. They got acquainted over light refreshments of fruit and water at the end. Residents were happy to start a healthy, energy pumping Saturday.

APAH New Properties; Provides Over 1200 Rental Units
Arlington Mill Grand Opening Adds 122 Affordable Units
APAH celebrated the Grand Opening of Arlington Mill Residences on March 24. Located adjacent to the Arlington Mill Community Center, Arlington Mill Residences is a partnership between Arlington County and APAH to provide affordable housing on public land, an innovative concept that significantly reduced development costs. APAH used capital savings to further reduce the rent on nearly one-third of the apartments to accommodate very low income households. The 13 permanent supportive units include an 8-unit supportive studio wing targeted for formerly homeless individuals. View photos of the community rooms, supportive studio and two-bedroom unit here and the Grand Opening Celebration here.

Robert Rozen, APAH Chair, was joined for the ribbon cutting by former County Board member Chris Zimmerman; Arlington Board Member Walter Tejada; Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette; APAH President/CEO Nina Janopaul; APAH Director of Development Dave Perrow; VHDA Executive Director Susan Dewey, and Brian Tracey, Senior Vice President of Bank of America Merrill Lynch. It Takes A Village
Rotary Club and Long & Foster Furnish Arlington Mill Supportive Studios The Crystal City Pentagon Rotary Club's Passageways program and Long & Foster's Arlington office fulfilled a year-long community service pledge to "Make a House A Home" by completely furnishing the 8 supportive studios at Arlington Mill for new residents coming out of homelessness. The effort, led by Julie Kim, included collecting and storing furniture, purchasing new bedding and household items and moving everything into the units to make them ready for occupancy. Arlington County's Department of Human Services staff, who are working closely with APAH to provide supportive services, joined with APAH and our new residents in appreciation of this generous volunteerism.

Meet APAH Resident
Profile of Torres Family at Columbia Grove

Fanny Torres has lived in Arlington since she came to the U.S. She and her husband, Luis, lived in other apartment complexes, before they settled at Columbia Grove 12 years ago. In that community, they watched their two daughters grow up, graduate from Arlington Public Schools, go to college and enter the workforce.
Fanny is a janitor at a federal building in Arlington County. She wakes up early to catch the bus to work at 6:50 am. Although driving would be easier, she knows that parking is more costly. She has developed friendships with her co-workers and appreciates her work environment, describing it as a type of "home." Luis recently started a new job in Arlington as a custodian with Arlington Public Schools.
Outside of work Fanny volunteers as an usher at Latinas Leading Tomorrow (LLT) Annual Conferences and sometimes gives short presentations to inspire other Latina mothers to educate their children. Fanny participates regularly in APAH resident services programs and is a great asset to Columbia Grove's Gatekeepers program, a type of neighborhood watch.
