Arlington County Board Member Chris Zimmerman announced his intentions to retire in early 2014. Chris was a major voice for affordable housing, particularly in the Pike Neighborhoods Plan. Four candidates have been announced to take over his seat and a special election is scheduled for early April. We encourage all who value affordable housing to engage all candidates on this important topic. A reception for Chris Zimmerman is on Saturday, Jan 25 at Arlington Mill Community Center in the evening.

APAH Donors & Volunteers Bring Cheer to APAH Residents
Thanks to Secret Santa Donors, Girl Scouts, Enterprise, and Inaugural Volunteers

Children at Columbia Grove and Buchanan Gardens received a visit from Santa this year, thanks to our two Santa volunteers. Through our rapidly growing resident services program and with the help of our wonderful donors, many families received presents through the Secret Santa/Adopt a Family program. We greatly appreciate our generous donors and volunteers who helped during the holiday season.

Terry McAuliffe's inaugural day of service on January 4th brought out eight volunteers who collected outerwear and coat donations. APAH received over 100 coats to distribute to our residents. Our resident service program also partnered with the Girl Scouts to collect and distribute clothes. Thanks also to Enterprise Community Partners, who provided dinner to our residents.

Redevelopment of APAH's Carlyn Springs Advances

Progress continues on the redevelopment of Carlyn Springs Apartments into The Springs. During the past week, the plan to build 104 new units on APAH's current site was approved by the Transportation, Planning, and Housing Commissions. The next step is the County Board hearing. We strongly encourage advocates to attend this hearing, scheduled for January 25th. The County Board agenda for this hearing can be found here.

Arlington Mill Grand Opening

Arlington Mill construction is in its final phases. Residents will begin moving in late next month. We are having our Grand Opening Celebration in March. Save the date and be on the lookout for the event invitation that will be sent via email.

Housing Costs Spur Innovative Approaches
The Arlington County Board plans to identify three to five publicly owned sites that can be redeveloped to include affordable housing. This decision came after a recent VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement) petition. The presentation of the petition is pictured above. Former chairman Walter Tejada referred to the Arlington Mills project as a model for these redevelopments. Read the entire article here.
