Season's Greetings from APAH!
We have much to celebrate!
2013 has been an incredible year for APAH, and we are filled with gratitude.
Construction on Arlington Mill is drawing to a close, and residents will begin moving into their new apartments early in 2014. Over 3000 people applied to live in the 122 new committed affordable units when the lottery opened in early fall. Look for news regarding the Grand Opening Celebration early next year.
Working in partnership with Arlington County and the Arlington Community Foundation, APAH announced "Ten Homes for Marbella," a lasting contribution to reduce homelessness in Arlington by providing ten one-bedroom apartments at Marbella for extremely low-income individuals who have incomes of $22,600 or less per year. "Ten Homes" residents receive supportive services from Arlington County and are actively engaged in APAH Resident Services programs.
The final site plan to redevelop APAH's 27-unit Carlyn Springs into The Springs is scheduled for approval in early 2014. This new affordable community, The Springs, will bring 104 studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments to the Ballston area and will feature underground parking, courtyards, a community center and house APAH's offices. The next step is to apply for Low Income Housing Tax Credits in March 2014.
In 2013, through our growing resident services program and collaboration with nonprofit partners, we were able to touch the lives of 500 residents with language classes, food donations, and programs like our Backpack Drive and Secret Santa. In 2014 APAH will expand resident services to include Arlington Mill.
There is still much work to be done. Many Arlington residents continue to struggle. Our goals are to develop at least 100 new affordable rental homes annually and to continue expanding our resident services programs through partnerships and programs. Bringing new affordable housing to Arlington isn't something we can accomplish alone.
We rely on your help, community support and advocacy. We applaud the Arlington County Board and Chair Walter Tejada for adopting ambitious new affordable housing finance and development tools at the December 14 Board meeting. At the same meeting, VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement) presented a petition with 10,000 signatures advocating for building 1,500 affordable apartments on public land.
Please make a contribution today. We are blessed by your generosity and work diligently to earn your trust as good stewards. 96 cents of every dollar you contribute goes directly to support APAH's work in developing affordable housing and promoting opportunity for our residents. Thank you again for your commitment to affordable housing and for your support of APAH's mission in Arlington.
Best wishes for the holidays,
