Preview Arlington Mill Residences
APAH Welcomes the Community to Tour a Model Unit on December 7

On December 7 from 12:00pm-4:00 pm, the public is invited to tour a model unit at Arlington Mill Residences. Tours begin at the Community Center during Saturday's Open House. The 122-unit apartment community is affordable to families and individuals earning 60% or less of the Area Median Income (AMI). APAH was chosen to develop Arlington Mill in October 2010, selected through a competitive RFP process against four other developers. Opening in early 2014, Arlington Mill has met with an unprecedented number of applicants.

Some quick facts about the Arlington Mill and APAH's work:

  •  Arlington Mill provides a range of choices in affordability and size from efficiencies to three-bedroom apartments. Our rents will be affordable for incomes ranging from 30% to 60% AMI. The majority of APAH households earn 50% AMI or less; our average household income is $40,700.
  • APAH used project savings to further reduce rent on 26 units to below the original proposal, and to return unused Low Income Housing Tax Credits to VHDA.
  • Through cost-efficient development and the County's public land policy, Arlington Mill's construction costs are $253,000/unit, $100,000/unit lower than the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) cap.
  • APAH used innovative financing and development tools to create an unprecedented number of units available at 30% AMI in Arlington County;  Arlington Mill has 13 units available to residents earning 30% AMI, including eight efficiencies set aside for those hardest to house. In addition, we offer five 30% AMI units at our Cameron Commons Apartments and ten 30% AMI units at Marbella Apartments.

APAH is proud to be dedicated exclusively to Arlington County, a leader in producing affordable housing. The county has secured $100 million in  LIHTC funding since 2009, a striking success compared to other, larger counties, including Fairfax, which acquired a fraction of this amount during the same time period. "We are very fortunate that Arlington County not only taps all available federal, state, and local funding to increase the amount of affordable housing in Arlington, but continues to innovate and utilize best practices in conjunction with partners like APAH," says Nina Janopaul, APAH President/CEO.

Fall Health Fairs Serve Over 200 Residents
APAH Resident Services Coordinators Work With Community Partners to Provide Free Health Screenings and Information
APAH Resident Services held fall health fairs at Columbia Grove and Marbella Apartments. Over 200 residents received information about county health programs, healthcare for children, WIC, Planned Parenthood, and healthy eating and exercise habits.

100 flu shots and a large number of vision and hearing tests were provided free of charge. There will be one more free flu clinic to deliver 100 flu vaccinations to residents of Marbella on Halloween.

APAH thanks the Lyons Club, Simplicity Urgent Care, INOVA Medical Group, Partnership for Healthier Kids, Arlington County Public Health Services, American University, and all the volunteers who helped make these events successful.

Residents' Visit to Columbia Pike Library Fun and Informative
APAH Residents Learned About Library Resources
Families from Buchanan Gardens and Columbia Grove visited the Columbia Pike Library for a tour of the building and its services. The group learned about the many resources available at the library, and some received their first library card. Both adults and children enjoyed the Reptiles Alive! show.

APAH coordinated the event and provided free transportation to and from the library. Special thanks to Desiree Fairooz, Columbia Pike Librarian, and to Sarah Levin, Greenbrier AmeriCorps Member, for their help.
Parc Rosslyn Hosts Arlington Town Hall Meeting
APAH Welcomes Arlington County Board Member Libby Garvey

County Board Member Libby Garvey met with Arlington residents recently at Parc Rosslyn, the location for the October Neighborhood Town Hall. APAH's Parc Rosslyn residents were among the 25 who attended. Residents asked Ms. Garvey to increase pedestrian safety in the nearby Hillside Park and in crossing N. Pierce Street.

The monthly meetings, held throughout Arlington, encourage residents to speak directly with County Board members on any topic. The November 20 Neighborhood Town Hall will be held at the Arlington Mill Community Center beginning at 6:45pm. Visit the Arlington County website here for more information.
