Residents Rally for Immigration Reform

Columbia Grove residents take leadership role in recent rally

Three Columbia Grove residents recruited fellow residents and served as bus captains for the April 10 Immigration March in Washington, DC, organized by Casa de Maryland.  Three busloads traveled from Columbia Grove to Washington, DC.  The participants came together and made a sign, "Columbia Grove United Nations Brigade," to take to the rally.  One resident said, "My child feels proud of me!  He understands, even at his young age, that immigration is an issue that affects our families."

Donors Contribute to Easter Celebrations

St. Mary's Episcopal Youth Group and Corporate Executive Board supply Easter eggs

APAH hosted Easter Egg Hunts at four of our properties, Columbia Grove, Buchanan Gardens, Marbella and Courthouse Crossings during Easter week. Children searched for over 700 plastic eggs provided by St. Mary's youth group and CEB, the Corporate Executive Board.  Thank you to our generous contributors!

Marymount Visits APAH for Volunteer Arlington Day

Volunteers target invasive species removal at Columbia Grove

Eight volunteers from Marymount University Campus Ministry --  a mixture of undergraduates, grad students and staff from Campus Ministry -- spent the afternoon removing English ivy from trees and other areas, as part of APAH's ongoing effort to remove invasive species from the rolling hills around Columbia Grove.  This annual Volunteer Arlington Day is sponsored by the Arlington Chamber and local businesses.

Meet New APAH Board Member, Kathie Panfil

APAH Welcomes Kathie Panfil, an Arlington 2013 Woman of Vision, to the Board of Directors

Kathie Panfil, retired Arlington Public School administrator, recently joined APAH's Board and serves on the Resident Services Committee.  Kathie served as Principal of Key Elementary when it became a bilingual program and Randolph Elementary when it became Arlington's first International Baccalaureate elementary school program.  She was an early Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala, El Salvador, Argentina, and Tanzania.  She served on the Board of Greenbrier Learning Center and currently serves on EduFuturo's Board.  She and her husband live in Arlington.  On March 7, the Arlington Country Commission on the Status of Women honored Ms. Panfil as a "2013 Woman of Vision" for her work with education and local government.

Affordable Housing News and Events

Affordable Housing Study Working Group - In March, the County convened the first meeting of the Working Group.  The purpose of the Study is to create a shared community vision of Arlington's affordable housing as a key component of our community sustainability.  The Study has three components:  Conducting housing needs survey to update current and future population needs; assessing and updating approaches and funding for affordable housing development; and, evaluating and updating the current housing principles, goals and targets.  All meetings are open to the public.  APAH's Director of Community and Resident Relations, Linda Kelleher, is Chair of the Community Outreach Subcommittee.

Alliance for Housing Solutions State of the County - Join AHS for the Annual State of Affordable Housing on May 15 from 4:00 pm-7:30 pm at the Walter Reed Community Center.  Prior to the main event, there will be a special session on "MicroUnits:  The Future or Faux Fad?"  To register, please visit the AHS site .

FY2014 County Budget passed - How Did Affordable Housing Fare?

We are very grateful to the Arlington County Board and staff for thoughtfully considering testimony from all viewpoints on the proposed budget and providing additional support for our most vulnerable residents in the FY14 budget.  The FY14 budget of $1.09 billion includes $9.5 million for the Affordable Housing Investment Fund, bringing funding for AHIF to its highest levels, and adds $338,850 in ongoing funding for permanent supportive housing.  For more detail, see the County website.

Housing Choice Voucher Programs

Arlington Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) programs for Northern Virginia jurisdictions have been hit by the sequestration budget cuts, forcing local governments to rescind vouchers that have been awarded to clients who have not yet leased up, and/or possibly having to revoke vouchers used by clients currently in housing.  Nationally, approximately 14,000 households will lose access to rental subsidies, and they are among the most vulnerable in our communities.  The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities has written a summary brief on this issue which provides additional information on the broader implications of this cut.
