APAH Receives Bank of America Grant
Grant recognizes APAH's contributions to the Arlington community

"APAH is deeply honored to be chosen for the prestigious Bank of America Neighborhood Builders Grant," said APAH President/CEO Nina Janopaul at a  Bank of America event last week.  "The award recognizes our success in marrying the best practices of housing development with a deep commitment to our community and our residents.  This capacity-building grant will be used to strengthen APAH's core competencies and build on our values as a caring and innovative organization committed to integrity and excellence," Janopaul added.

"Nonprofits provide much needed services in Greater Washington, but too often lack the opportunity to invest in their own long-term growth and development," said Jeff Wood, Greater Washington market president, Bank of America.  "We are pleased to recognize the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing because we've seen the great work they've done to provide housing for homeless and low income residents and know that this program will help them reach even more individuals who desperately need affordable homes."

The Neighborhood Builders program recognized APAH and Washington, DC-based Samaritan Inns for their critical role in in the local community with a generous $200,000 unrestricted grant that is paid over two years and leadership development for nonprofit directors and emerging leaders.  The only other Arlington recipient of this award was the Arlington Free Clinic in 2006.

Resident Children Begin a Reading Enrichment Program
APAH partners with The Reading Connection to spread a love of literature among children

The Reading Connection and APAH are working together at our Columbia Grove property to promote education and a passion for reading among APAH's residents. Together, with funds from the United Way, APAH and Reading Connection built a library of over 200 books in the Community Room. Children, ages 4 to 9, come on Monday evenings to listen to local volunteers read aloud and then complete reading-based activities. At the end of the weekly sessions, children choose one book to take home as a gift.

APAH Proposes to Redevelop Carlyn Springs Apartments
Redevelopment seeks to increase affordable housing in transit-oriented Ballston area
The site of APAH's 27-unit, Carlyn Springs Apartments (4318 N. Carlin Springs Road), was included in the North Quincy Street Plan Addendum that the Arlington County Board approved in late February.  In March APAH held a preliminary meeting with Carlyn Springs residents regarding the project.  "This is the first step in a multi-year process that would allow APAH to build 100+ units with underground parking and provide a new headquarters for APAH in 2015," said President/CEO Nina Janopaul.
APAH Speaks Up for Affordable Housing
APAH resident and CEO testify at County Budget Hearing

APAH resident David Gray and President/CEO Nina Janopaul encouraged the County Board's continued support for affordable housing.  David, a Buchanan Gardens resident, said that affordable housing and a Housing Grant "changed his life" by allowing him to live independently in his own apartment.  Nina applauded the County's adoption of the Columbia Pike Neighborhood Plan that promises to preserve or replace 6,200 units of rental housing that is affordable to 60% of the Area Median  Income (about $64,000 for a family of four). She noted that other cities -- Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and others -- are grappling with similar housing issues and have recently established ambitious affordable housing goals.

FIT Relationships (TM) at APAH
APAH residents begin an interpersonal relationship seminar program led by Federal Leadership Institute
Over a dozen residents at Columbia Grove and Buchanan Gardens enrolled in a FIT Program (Foundations of Integrity and Trust) designed to build and foster healthy interpersonal relationships. The classes, conducted in Spanish, occur once a week for seven weeks. The classes cover themes such as self-esteem, communication, finance and childcare. At the conclusion of the workshop, residents not only will have learned valuable skills but will also receive a FIT certification. As FIT says, "the program is FREE, a solid relationship is priceless."
