 APAH Residents Learn Workplace Skills
Residents receive CPR certification; others begin English-language classes

Ten APAH residents recently earned CPR certification and learned basic first aid at Buchanan Gardens. Residents report that certification is useful in service-related positions and led one resident to receive a promotion.

For the first time Buchanan Gardens is the location of the twice weekly, 12-week English Language classes that APAH provides in partnership with REEP (Arlington Education and Employment Program). Eighteen Buchanan Gardens and Columbia Grove residents - all Spanish speakers - are learning beginning English to improve workplace skills.

APAH Welcomes New Board Member
John Milliken joins APAH's Board of Directors

In December the APAH Board elected a new Board member. John Milliken served  on the Arlington County Board from 1980-1990 where he helped Arlington's smart growth vision while looking for public-private options to preserve affordable housing. John is a partner in the law firm of Venable LLP where he specializes in transportation, land use and environmental law associated with major infrastructure projects. John lives in Arlington with his wife and son. In 2011, John was named APAH Affordable Housing Honoree.

We appreciate the contributions and expertise of departing Board members Bob Fox, FOX Architects and David Hannah, Bean, Kinney & Korman.

Boy Scouts Volunteer at Columbia Grove
Local Troop 106 works in Columbia Grove's playground

Boy Scouts volunteered at Columbia Grove to improve the playground and landscaping. Will Snoeyenbos, who spearheaded the project in his work towards becoming an Eagle Scout, said of the playground, "It's an ideal project. Improving it will have a distinctly positive impact on the local community." Overall the troop spread mulch and sand to refurbish the playground and removing invasive vines and weeds from the area.

Arlington County Board Approves N. Quincy Street Plan Addendum in Ballston area

The Arlington Board approved a plan to transform a portion of the Ballston area to provide increased opportunities for affordable housing while transforming the southern gateway of Ballston from an automobile-oriented area into an urban place with a more pedestrian friendly built environment. APAH's 27-unit Carlyn Springs Apartments is included in study area for the plan; the County Board's decision would permit APAH increase the number of committed affordable units to about 100. Check Arlington County's website for more information on the County-adopted plan.

Many thanks to friends of affordable housing who testified at the Planning Commission and County Board meetings from VOICE and Alliance for Housing Solutions.
