Holiday packages came in all sizes at APAH this year
APAH donors contributed Adopt-a-Family/Secret Santa gifts to more low-income households this year than ever before. Your generosity helped 130 families with children, 20 more families than in 2012. More than 70 individual donors participated.
APAH residents a t Marbella, Columbia Grove and Buchanan Gardens also joined in the holiday festivities, complete with Santa Claus handing out small presents. Del. Patrick Hope (above), a "veteran Kris Kringle," visited Marbella. He supports "Hope for Kids," a charitable effort that collects and distributes toys to children in low income households. Del. Arlington Mill Residences Update
Construction is on schedule for a Grand Opening late in 2013
Columbia Pike at South Dinwiddie Street is the location of major construction -- the County's Arlington Mill Community Center and, behind it, APAH's Arlington Mill Residences. "Construction for APAH's four-story affordable housing community is moving ahead on schedule and on budget and will be completed late in 2013," said APAH President/CEO Nina Janopaul. "We are excited that our innovative public/private partnership with Arlington County that will benefit the community by providing attractive, sustainable affordable housing next door to the County's new Community Center." |

Arlington volunteers spread the word on emergency preparedness
Over 32 volunteers -- including high school students from Washington-Lee and Yorktown, Arlington residents and volunteers from other Northern Virginia communities -- helped Arlington's Volunteer Emergency Support Team and Arlington Medical Reserve Corps go door-to-door on MLK Day of Service to tell APAH's Columbia Grove residents about emergency preparedness. Volunteers delivered information and encouraged residents to create an emergency plan and sign up for Arlington's emergency communication alerts.

Mongolian Residents Celebrate Cultural Heritage at Marbella
Residents celebrate Mongolian New Year
APAH is partnering with the Mongolian School of the National Capital Area to celebrate Mongolian cultural events at our North Arlington properties. We celebrated Mongolian New Year with Mongolian food and beverages and a special performance of the Snowflake Girls. North Arlington is home to one of the largest populations of Mongolian individuals and families outside of their home country; over 90 Mongolian families live in APAH's North Arlington properties. This program is part of APAH's new monthly Cultural Connection series in North Arlington, where residents share food, beverage and the culture of their native country with fellow residents. |

Arlington County Chair names affordable housing a top priority
Arlington County Chair Walter Tejada named affordable housing a top priority in his January 2, 2013 speech. He emphasized new ways to finance affordable housing. "I have asked the Manager to analyze and submit a recommendation by June 2013 for creating a transit oriented affordable housing fund on Columbia Pike," Tejada said.
He promised to continue to strongly advocate for an increased investment in affordable housing. Tejada said, "We need it to maintain the cultural and economic diversity that is so vital to Arlington's soul ... for all of Arlington." Read the complete speech.

Arlington Board Chair Walter Tejada announced eight Neighborhood Town Halls and Town Walks where residents can speak directly to County Board members on any topic. Click here for other dates and locations.
Participate in the upcoming Arlington budget process
Sign up for Open Arlington, an online forum, where you can express your support for affordable housing and rank budget priorities for fiscal year 2014.
The County Manager presents the fiscal year 2014 budget in February and the Board will hold hearings on March 26 (budget) and March 28 (tax) beginning at 7:00 pm in the County Board Room 307, 2100 Clarendon Blvd. Residents are invited to testify on program and budget priorities. Advance sign up procedures for both hearings will begin five days in advance of each hearing date. |
