Resident Services Update
Nonprofit partners and volunteers focus on needs, programs and energy savings
Alice Hogan conducting survey

APAH is nearing completion of a resident needs and asset survey that will drive resident services programs in the coming years and help us to better understand our residents and how their needs differ.

APAH's South Arlington residents recently learned about "deferred action," an expansion of current immigration laws for children born outside of the US. Edgar Aranda Yanoc, an immigration and employment law expert from the Legal Aid Justice Center also discussed worker's rights.

The Virginia Cooperative Extension Service Weatherization Masters are partnering with APAH to provide energy-saving apartment weatherization to residents at Marbella and Queens Court and track savings. Teams will begin weatherization for interested residents in December.

APAH appreciates the work of volunteers organized by Property Management Association (Brickman Group, Southern Management Corp., American Pest, Raine & Son, Scheffres Laundry Service, Ferguson Enterprises, Superior Mechanical Services, Unlimited Restoration, Northeast Contracting Corp., Kolb Electric, PotholeRepair, LCOR, C&C Complete Services, EnviroSolutions, ePIPE, NVM Paving Concrete and Toepfer Construction). They landscaped a courtyard at Courthouse Crossings Apartments and rid the area of invasive ivy.

PMA landscaping volunteers Super Storm Sandy caused some minor damage and power outages at APAH's Columbia Pike, Buchanan Gardens and Marbella Apartments. Staff handed out flashlights provided by Capital One and information on emergency resources. Grelia Soliz from Arlington's Office of Emergency Management spoke at recent resident programs.

APAH Launches "Ten Homes" for Marbella
Program to house Arlington's most at risk population

APAH President/CEO Nina Janopaul announced a unique, long-term program to provide 10 one-bedroom apartments at Marbella at very low rents to house Arlington's most vulnerable homeless population, as part of the Arlington 100 Homes Campaign and the Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness. "We are truly honored to be an important part of the solution to end homelessness through this innovative public/private partnership funded by Arlington County and the Arlington Community Foundation," said Janopaul.

"This is another significant step forward in Arlington's effort to end homelessness," said Department of Human Services Director Susanne Eisner. "Having a roof over your head makes so many things possible," said Eisner. "Once housing is stabilized we see better outcomes in physical and mental health, employment, substance abuse. The community will also see a return on this investment -- it costs less money to house someone in stable, supportive housing than it does to maintain a homeless person stuck in the revolving door of high-cost crisis care and emergency housing."  Click here for details.

APAH Invites Secret Santa Donors to Adopt a Family
Team up with family and friends to help APAH children have a brighter holiday

For many families, money is tighter than ever this year. Please consider donating to the APAH's annual Secret Santa/Adopt-A-Family Program. If you are interested in adopting a low-income family or an individual, please contact Shanette Yao, Resident Services Coordinator, North Arlington, at syao@apah.org by November 20th and she will match you to a resident or family and provide you with their wish list of much needed household items, clothing and/or toys. We recommend $30 per person. Thank you for your generosity.  For more information, click here.

Community Service Project Sponsors Clothing Drive
Arlington residents are invited to volunteer on November 10
Clothing drive logo The Community Service Project, a coalition of faith and civic associations serving Arlington's Helping Hands agencies, is collecting women's, men's and children's clothes for a clothing give-a-way at APAH's Buchanan Gardens Apartments. A Collection Box for gently used adult and children's winter clothing is outside the Brethren Church at 300 N. Montague where you may leave your donations night and day.  Volunteers are needed on November 10 to hand out clothing. Sign up to volunteer on their website.
