UI professor introduces students to
world of Brazilian Carnival
This month, UI Professor Duarte and 20 students will travel to Duarte's native Brazil on the Brazilian Carnival winter program to witness the colorful preparations of what many call "the biggest spectacle on Earth." Duarte designed the course, which focuses on the music, dance, history, and culture of Carnival and gives students a unique opportunity to participate in this artistic celebration. From only six students in its first year, the program continues to grow and improve under Duarte's leadership. Read more

Students protest closing of UI Center for Human Rights
The future of the UI Center for Human Rights has been a sensitive and impassioned subject this past month. Provost Butler and Dean Thomas are in discussions with UICHR leadership about a new future for the UICHR. Students and staff, led by the student organization UI Students for Human Rights, have gathered over 2,000 signatures in a petition and protested against its closure outside the Old Capitol. Former U.S. Ambassador speaks on international careers, globalization in Iowa
Former ambassador to Eritrea and visiting UI professor Ronald McMullen offered advice to students this month as part of an event centered on careers in international politics.
