Hart House Theatre presents a farce of international proportions
Boeing Boeing
|
Toronto, Ontario - Opening February 26, Hart House Theatre is pleased to bring a world-wide audience favourite to our stage. Lauded as the most performed French play throughout the world, this English translation boasts several successful revivals in London and New York. Directed by Toronto talent Cory Doran and starring a cast of trained, emergent performers, our production of Boeing Boeing promises to be an energetic and fast-paced farce with the high production value that Hart House Theatre audiences enjoy.
Boeing Boeing is a non-stop comedy and a romp of international proportions. Full of hijinks, near misses and sexual innuendo, Boeing Boeing is like a bite of fluffy French pastry - a delicious treat, except this one comes without any guilt or troublesome consequences.
We are honoured to have Cory Doran return to Hart House Theatre to direct this project. His past work has earned him praise for the use of physical comedy, the timing of his work and the nuanced way in which he helps the performers bring their characters to life.
When asked about his thoughts on this period farce and what it had to offer an audience, Cory had this to say:
"Boeing Boeing is a hilarious fast paced take on what happens when someone tries to enjoy life beyond their own capabilities. Bernard is living his idea of paradise as a playboy in early 1960's Paris. He has a great career as an architect and juggles three Air Hostess fiancées who have no idea they aren't his only love. With the help of his slightly stressed maid Berthe, he is able to keep everyone in the dark until his old school friend Robert arrives unannounced at his door. The finely organised schedule of coming and goings is thrown into chaos. It's a callback to the traditional door farce.
It's a great show to approach as a director. It is rare to be given the reins on a true farce. A farce, by nature, begins in grounded reality and becomes unglued by the characters' single minded drive for personal gain or, as is often the case, sex! When doing farce there is a liberty to dive into the realm of clown and physical comedy, that would in another show appear disjointed or unbelievable. But since a farce is reality being affected by a series of unreal circumstances, one is given much in terms of range and freedom. I hope that the audience will leave sore from laughter and with an appreciation for the choreography that goes into a physical comedic piece."
Tasked with creating the world of an apartment in 1960s Paris, complete with the international flair of its visitors is the design team Brandon Kleiman (set), Kathleen Black (costumes) and Joseph Patrick (lighting).
