Hart House Theatre presents the Toronto Premiere of
Bone Cage
Featuring Layne Coleman

Bone CageToronto, Ontario - Opening September 20, Hart House Theatre is proud to present the Toronto premiere of Catherine Banks' tragi-comedy Bone Cage. Directed by Hart House Theatre alumnus Matt White and featuring the formidable Layne Coleman in a cast of the city's finest emerging talent, Bone Cage is a prime example of what Hart House Theatre does best. It features professionals, trained youth and students in a production that is both compelling and unique. For this particular production, Hart House Theatre is thrilled to announce that the playwright, Catherine Banks, will be joining us for the opening week and making public appearances to discuss her work. More details of her visit are included below.

Winner of the 2008 Governor General's Literary Award for Drama, Bone Cage explores the desolation and desperate struggle of a group of young adults striving to rise above the pillaged landscape of rural Nova Scotia. Through dark poetry and wry humour, Banks creates a world where all people are trapped in cages of their own construction as inescapable as their own bodies.

Taking on the challenge of creating Catherine Banks' pillaged Nova-Scotian landscape is a design team that brings years of professional training and experience to the project. Set Designer Elizabeth Kantor is a graduate of the University of Ottawa and the prestigious National Theatre School. Her award-winning designs have been lauded in Toronto and toured across the country.  Costume Designer Ming Wong is no stranger to Hart House Theatre. Her designs have been seen in critically acclaimed works throughout the city and have earned her a nod from the Dora jurors for Outstanding Costume Design. Lighting Designer David DeGrow comes to us from Theatre Jones Roy and numerous other Toronto companies. He has taught workshops to youth groups from Canadian Stage, Alameda Theatre and Cahoots Theatre. Last fall, David was the interim production manager for Theatre Passe Muraille and production manager for TPM's Theatre Beyond Walls season.  Rounding out the design team is soundscape creator Alexander Punzalan Junior whose work has been heard in theatres as well as on television.

FEATURING

Layne Coleman
Layne Coleman as Clarence

Layne Coleman's contribution to the performing arts in Canada is beyond measure. His career as an actor/director/writer/educator resulted in an astounding list of credentials. Through his work with Theatre Passe Muraille, Factory Theatre, Tarragon Theatre and Canadian Stage, he has shaped the indie theatre scene in Toronto! Hart House Theatre is thrilled to have Layne on board for our season opener and we're proud to know that our emergent talent will have the opportunity to work with, and be mentored by, an artist of such caliber.

Nathan Bitton
Nathan Bitton as Jamie

Nathan Bitton makes his debut at Hart House Theatre, but as a graduate of the theatre program at the University of Toronto and a graduate of Sheridan College's acting program, he is no stranger to the campus or the Toronto theatre scene. Playing the volatile dreamer in Bone Cage, Nathan is poised on the brink of his professional career.

Samantha Coyle
Samantha Coyle as Chicky

Samantha Coyle makes her debut at Hart House Theatre playing Jamie's tough-as-nails sister who has a soft-spot for the married fellas. After training and working in New York City, Samantha has starred in many film projects and has made a splash on the Fringe scene.

Lindsey Middleton
Lindsey Middleton as Krista

After performing in the Hart House Players' production of Rhyme, Reason or Otherwise, and completing her degree with the University of Toronto's joint training program with Sheridan College, Lindsey Middleton returns to Hart House Theatre to play Jamie's devoted (if somewhat misled) fiance, Krista.
