The current church dates from 1781 and was designed by Francis Hiorn of Warwick. It is one of the earliest and best examples of Georgian Gothic churches in the country. The tower houses a ring of 8 bells dating from 1722 and some 52 steps up the tower. It is also home to a carillon which strikes at 3 hourly intervals during the day.

Impressions of a new Cotswold owner

Lisa E. 6/22/2014
"I'll never forget my first approach to Tetbury. Getting comfortable driving on the other side of a winding country road, shifting with my left hand, I was anxious to reach the town before evening. The sun was setting, the sky was pink, and against that colorful backdrop: the dark spire of St Mary's Church in the distance! Almost there!

"What a joy to begin discovering the town: small enough to be immediately welcoming, large enough to offer more shops and restaurants than we were able to enjoy in a short visit. Dairy goodness at The House of Cheese, a wine bar and shop near The Chipping Steps, local honey and preserves at Highgrove Shop. The weekly Wednesday market from an outdoor patio at The Snooty Fox.

Bunnies frolicking on the hillside during a picnic at Preston Park. Beautiful gardens and flowers abound. Had to take it easy this trip but look forward to walking many public footpaths. Did revel in the old and young trees at Westonbirt Arboretum, just a few kilometers south. My husband will be spoilt for choice in golf courses.

| "Tetbury's royal connections can take you by surprise. HRH Prince Charles has a country home nearby. Camilla planted a Wedding Cake Tree in the church yard, commemorating the marriage of William and Kate. While shopping in a clothing store, I overheard the owner say to a patron: Oh, the Duchess of Cambridge wore that recently to (such-and-such an event)... "We were thrilled to be able to walk through the townhouse on Church Street one afternoon. A master craftsman spent the last year renovating and his fine work is in evidence everywhere. We enjoyed the sun-filled rooms through west-facing windows - but it occurred to me the morning light strikes the kitchen. The old beams are reminders of a building that probably dates to the 17th century and the modern details contrast perfectly. Then there's something about the place I find difficult to express; it just feels good. The layout is smart, the colors are well-chosen, the proportions work. Then you step outside and you're in the heart of Tetbury. Perfect!"
