The concluding chapter of the Book of Joshua has a moving and powerful scene where Joshua, God's faithful leader, assembles all the tribes of Israel including the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. (Joshua 24:1)  As they were assembled before God and each other, Joshua presented them with a life-shaping decision: Choose this day who you are willing to serve.

In my mind's eye, I can see a towering character named Joshua standing before thousands and calling them to task. He's confident, strong, unafraid, sure of the God he served.  Out of these very qualities, Joshua addresses the many that are assembled, and he issues a life-determining choice to make.

We all have choices. Some choices are as simple as what to wear today. Other choices are much more complex and determine what will ultimately define our lives. One such choice is the god we follow.  The Israelites were challenged to choose between the one true God or the gods of their ancestors.

Out of Joshua' s riveting speech, the Israelites made their choice: therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God. (Joshua 24:18b). They renewed a covenant to be obedient to a faithful God. God had kept God's promise and God had delivered them to a new future found in the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

We choose who we serve in so many ways.  We choose the masters of life in the value we place on our jobs and careers, the investment of our time, the extent to which we share our talents, the way in which we invest, spend or give our money. Joshua challenged the Israelites to make a choice and then live by it.

Who or what do you serve? How is the choice of your true loyalty observed by your family and friends? How do you determine where to give your time, talent, and financial resources?

This Sunday, November 16, we will have the opportunity to once again present a commitment card that includes an estimate of giving for 2015.  How will the God or gods of your choice be reflected in your commitment?

I am praying for you and our entire congregation as we anticipate Stepping N2 the Future, and as we each take the next step in our spiritual journey.

May we together, like the Israelites, clearly affirm, As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.

Will I see you Sunday?

In Christ,

TH

 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

sepia-handshake-header.jpg GREETERS WANTED
One of the strategic stepping stones for FUMC Allen is to promote intentional hospitality. We already have greeters who extend a warm welcome to all who come in our doors but we need MORE! Stop by the Welcome Table this Sunday, and sign up to greet one Sunday a month. Just show up 20 minutes before the service you usually attend. Put on your genuine happy face and be part of our hospitality team!

Want to do more? At FUMC Allen, we don't have a "front" door to our campus, so we need some extra enthusiastic people to meet guests in our parking lot! Advent Season is coming, which means lots of extra guests needing a smiling face and directions. Prayerfully consider joining our hospitality team. Contact Peggy Breeze.

As Christians, we are called to go OUT into the world to do the work of Christ. At FUMC Allen, we track the hours our members IMPACT the community working as volunteers for various service organizations, such as Allen Community Outreach, schools, sport teams, scouts, and more.

Our 2014 year-to-date total is 5,627 hours.

Report your service hours on the registration form found in this bulletin, and keep up the great work.
