You and I are stewards of the future. That may seem strange to think of ourselves as managers and caretakers of what we don't have, but what we do now impacts the future. And while we can say this of many things in our life, I'm especially thinking of our lives together as members and friends of FUMC Allen.

As we continue to think about Stepping N2 the Future, I am keenly aware that so much of what we do today will shape the future of FUMC Allen. I was recently rereading our church's history and was reminded that on June 19, 1966, First Methodist Church broke ground along Highway 5, our current location. One year later, our church occupied a new facility in an area that many considered to be way out in the country. Alton Boyd and Dan Strong, both members of the church, built what is now the Fellowship Hall. For many years, that space served as our sanctuary, and now it is the current home for The Way, our traditional plus worship service lead by Rev. Brian McPherson and Rev. Rusty King.

The purchase of the land in 1966 and the completion of the first phase of our church has long impacted our ability to minister to our neighbors, provide a spiritual home for so many, and serve as a hub of activity in Allen and surrounding communities. What those church members did nearly 50 years ago has molded, shaped, formed, and crafted who we are as a church and how we uniquely serve others around the corner and around the globe.

Buying the land of our current location and building the first phase was bold and courageous. Those actions demonstrated the faith of those who have gone before us.

What we do or don't do today and in the near future will determine the ministry of First United Methodist Church of Allen for years to come and well into the next generation. While we cannot control the actions of the rest of the world, we can make decisions and take steps within our church that will undoubtedly offer hope and encouragement.

What legacy are we leaving? How are we fortifying and securing our ministries in order to truly step into the future and make a tremendous impact locally and beyond? How are we adapting our ministries in order to engage our current culture so that new people of faith will claim the story of Christ as their own and then join our effort to Change the World?

I hope to see you this Sunday as we continue Stepping N2 the Future and consider where God is leading us and fully realize that we each have a role to play.

hand-washing.jpgFor Your Health

In recent weeks, the Ebola scare and surrounding health issues have been a top concern in our community. We have been assured that it is very unlikely that we would be faced with a direct exposure at our church. However, FUMC Allen has put together a Health Safety Task Force to ensure that we are doing all we can to minimize any risks.

You will be receiving more information from them at the beginning of next week.

In the mean time, it's Cold & Flu Season, and a good time to remind ourselves of the routine precautions we should take to control the spread of common infectious illnesses:

  • Cover all coughs and sneezes with a tissue or use the crook of your arm
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizers if soap and water is not available
  • Avoid touching eyes and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Get a flu vaccination

Words from The Word

Don't be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man sows, that he shall also reap. Galatians 6:7

Cast your bread upon the waters, for you shall find it after many days.
Ecclesiastes 11:1

Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.

Stewardship/Generosity Report
On October 19, we received $33,242 in the offering. We celebrate and thank you for your generosity. By year-end 2014, we need to receive $490,764 to complete our ministry funding and operating budget. If you have questions about your pledge balance; want to set up online contributions; or need information about stock transfers, contact Jackie Campbell, JackieC@fumcallen.org or 972.727.8261. Together, by God's grace, we can do all things through Christ!

As Christians, we are called to go OUT into the world to do the work of Christ. At FUMC Allen, we track the hours our members IMPACT the community working as volunteers for various service organizations, such as Allen Community Outreach, schools, sport teams, scouts, and more.

Our 2014 year-to-date total is 5,135 hours.

Report your service hours on the registration form found in this bulletin, and keep up the great work.
