Barnstable Village

Meet the Author Book Signings

Sturgis Library invites local authors to reserve a spot in our Book Shop on Saturdays for Meet the Author!  Saturday Book Signings.  Authors can reserve an hour and a half to sign and sell books in our Book Shop space.  This is a great way for local authors to connect with their readers and market their books, and for readers to discover new authors.

To learn more about this new opportunity, visit our Meet the author web page.

4th of July Photos

Sturgis Library has recently cataloged a collection of Barnstable Village 4th of July photographs by Cape Cod Times photographer Steve Heaslip.  Steve donated the photographs, which date back to the 1970s, to our archives, and he will be donating more photos in future years.

The photos show the Barnstable West Barnstable annual 4th of July parade and activities at the Hollow.  Each year Steve takes the albums to the Hollow to display and to get help identifying the people in the photographs. Now that the albums reside here at Sturgis Library, anyone interested in looking at them and identifying people can request the collection at the main desk.

The 2015 and 2016 parade photographs can also be viewed on our flickr page -- to see them, click here.

Many thanks to Steve for this generous donation!

Featuring Moby Dick; or, The Whale

Sturgis Library will be exhibiting editions of Moby Dick by Herman Melville during the month of September.   Books include editions illustrated by Barry Moser and Rockwell Kent, as well as a pop-up version, board book edition, and numerous others.  The highlight of the exhibit will be a very rare first edition of Moby Dick; Or, The Whale, published in 1851 by Harper and Brothers.  This wonderful edition was recently donated to the Library by Trustee Emeritus Joanne Lyman. We are very grateful for her generosity.  The exhibit will also feature whaling images, artifacts, and sculpture.

Sturgis Library has extensive maritime collections which feature titles and archival materials on whales and whaling.  Library founder William Sturgis was close friends with Lemuel Shaw Sr., Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and father-in-law of Herman Melville.  Lemuel Shaw Jr., brother of Melville's wife, was one of the first Trustees of Sturgis Library when it opened in 1867.

Teen Artist(s) Needed!

Want to make a permanent mark on Sturgis Library and delight young children who play here for years to come?  Are you a passionate and talented artist?  Do you need community service hours for school?  Here's your chance!

Sturgis Library Dollhouse Project
Miss Megan has obtained a solid wood dollhouse for the Children's Room and is looking for a teen (or several to work together) to design and paint a one-of-a-kind masterpiece for Sturgis kids to enjoy.  Painting the dollhouse to resemble Sturgis Library would be really cool but it is currently a clean slate and all design concepts are welcome.  It can be a classic approach or imaginatively embellished with funky details galore - anything goes!

If interested, please get in touch with Megan at sturgiskids@comcast.net and share some of your art samples.  Please indicate if you would prefer to take on the project solo or with a group.

Thanks!!

Your Donations Welcomed!

give
Sturgis Library relies on donations throughout the year to fund Library programs, services, and building maintenance and preservation.  We must raise 60% of our annual operating budget through donations, grants, proceeds from sales and events, and other non-municipal sources.

Even if you cannot give much to our annual appeal, there are numerous other ways to support Sturgis Library.  Here are other ways to give:
  • Donate your car or other vehicle! Do you have a car (or boat, or motorcyle, or camper, or trailer) you no longer use that is taking up space in your garage? Donate it to the Library!  You can fill out a simple online form to get the process started, and the rest will be taken care of, including pickup of the vehicle and the paperwork to use for a tax deduction.
  • We will be holding our second online auction in November 2016, and are accepting donations of new or gently used quality items.  Last year people donated a Disney resort stay, a stay at an apartment in Boston, an evening of sunsets, dinner and cocktails on Sandy Neck, art, photographs, quilts, jewelry, collectible books, prints, and much more.  Think outside the box and see if you have something to donate to this special auction.
  • Our annual holiday sale is coming up in December.  We accept new and gently used holiday and winter-themed items including ornaments, decorations, household decor, wrapping paper, cards, ribbon, wreaths, art, and more.
  • Our jewelry and accessories sale will be held in 2017.  Clean out your jewelry box and accessories drawer -- we accept jewelry of all kinds, purses, scarves, belts, men's ties, suspenders, and more.  We also accept new and handcrafted jewelry, vintage and costume pieces, and gold and silver items, even if they are broken.
  • The annual plant and garden sale will be held in late May 2017.  In addition to donations of all kinds of plants, we accept donations of gently used garden decor, tools, plant pots, birdhouses and feeders, trellises, garden and yard furniture, and more.
  • We accept small household items throughout the year for our mini-thrift shop.
  • Last but not least, we accept donations of new and gently used books, movies, music, puzzles and games for our Book Shop.  We accept both current and vintage books, with a special interest in antiquarian titles.  Children's titles are always in short supply.

We will accept donations of these items throughout the year -- they can be dropped off at the main desk during regular library hours.  If you have difficulty delivering them, we can arrange for pickup.

Thanks in advance for your donations!  We really appreciate it!
